Question About Water

Now, I forget where, but I have read that it is not good to use tap water or even some bottled water for corn snakes, as there are often chemicals in the water that can negatively affect the snakes. Can anyone tell me if this is a real concern? And if so, what can be done about it? We do not have any type of water purification system in our home, and I doubt that my parents would be willing to shell out some money to buy one for my snake, if they allow me to get one.

Also, one more thing, if anyone knows of other specific problems that I might need to know about before I get a snake, I would love to hear about it. I've read many of the old threads and posts on the forums, so I have gathered a good deal of information on how to deal with things like picky eaters, handling, and other such things related to their basic care.

Tap water can have chlorine and flouride and all that weird stuff that *we* wouldn't wanna drink. Think of how it could affect such a little critter. A good way to get around buying a water purification thing is to buy gallons of water at Walmart or the grocery store or whatever. Humans don't even drink the water around here, and thats what I do. One gallon will last one snake a long time, and a gallon is like 50 cents.

I use a brita filter. Not expensive - you buy a jug and separate filter cartridges.

I live in Ontario and our water is fine, I only feed my snakes tap water and never have I had a problem. Remember snakes in the wild drink worse water then tap water, and they are pretty healthy.

I read somewhere to only give them water from the cold tap, because hot water makes rust on the pipes or something :)

If it is water you would not drink, don't give it to them. But I would imagine them to be somewhat tolerable of poor water quality-with all the acid rain all over the place. :puke01:

I was told only to give filtered or spring water near room temerature. Fortunately I have a side by side fridge with ice and filtered water...I only give my snake filtered. Also, on the same subject I was recently informed to clean the snakes's water bowl in hot water with a mild soap daily to prevent bacteria from building up.
