I have seen a few breeders suggest a smaller viv for hatchlings, Because of wide open spaces could stress out the little ones. In your opinions do you think this is acceptable or do I need to get a smaller viv?

I have a 20 gallon tank set up I have 3 hides /1 warm side /1 middle of the tank /1 cool side. I have a water bowl in the middle of the tank, and I also plan on putting some branches for climbing. Disinfected branches of course.

I am going to keep him and his deli dish in the tank, but for freedom of him moving around I will keep the lid off and use the dish for his feedings.

I also have covers on the sides of the viv and back, for less exposure.

I have some fake plants in the viv, in theory I am thinking if I put a few decoratoins in the tank I can make less air space. So that it does not seem so wide open terrain.

Sounds like a nice set-up. I kept my hatchling (although she was 18" when I got her) in a 10 gl. But she went to a 30 pretty quick. She's very laid back though. My Aztec is in the 15 the amel came out of, and she'll probably be in it for a while. I don't think she would want bigger spaces. She's much more nervous. You'll have to judge your snake's reaction.

Well what I did was section off the cage so now its smaller. :) so when he gets bigger It will be an easy fix :) Better to have a non stressful snake then one.

Oh one more thing, is it okay to have the aspen bedding or just stay to the paper towel, until he gets bigger.. but just feed out of his deli cup?

I read so much and each person will say something different.

I think most people will agree that if you feed, you should not feed on substrate. If you want the aspen, then you need to feed in the deli cup, or some other place that won't have the substrate mixing with the food. If you have paper in the viv, you can feed directly in the viv if you want.

I know about not feeding on the substrate, .. I was asking more is it okay to have aspen bedding in the cage? For a hatchling or should I stick to the paper towels?

I think aspen is fine for a hatchling. I typically keep mine on paper towels when they are little, but that's because I feed them in their enclosures. I think it is less stressful for a baby to be fed in its enclosure (less handling).

Well I want to say thank you , all of the responses I have gotten and all of the questions answered.

I enjoy this site out of all the sites I visit I find alot of information.

I will be ready for my corn in July. :)

I have everything set up just waiting for the hatchling :D

Post pictures when you get them. I'm waiting for a pair also. Should be coming in August.
