Questions on a new viv . . .

Duke and Daniel

We are transferring our 2.5 year old snow corn to a 40 gallon aquarium. The 20 gallon was just seeming too small. We are also transferring from using the repti-bark to aspen. Big changes coming for Duke!!

The new tank is an aquarium made of glass. The old tank was a snake tank made of lightweight plastic (Exo-terra brand I believe). Because of the change in materials, do I need to use a mat of some sort on top of the glass that is over the UTH? I have a thermostat but am concerned that the glass may get too hot even with the thermostat. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Also, has anyone had luck transferring their UTH from one tank to the other? They seemed pretty sticky but I bet I could peel it off. I just don't want to screw it up!

Should we move Duke and wait a few days before handling him or feeding him?

I have a glass tank w/UTH and nothing over it, no issues, but if you are concerned then a piece of slate floor tile over it would help diffuse the heat. The UTH are usually pretty stuck on and pulling them off can damage the internal wiring which may create hot spots.

As for feeding and handling, yes, wait a few days for him to settle in his new digs.

Duck tape has a shiny silver version that's specifically for heating duct-work and such. I've heard of people wrapping their UTH's in that tape and then you can move it from tank to tank for as long as you want; simply attach it with more of the silver tape.

Wish I had known this before sticking my UTH to my 15g! That's the only thing that bothered me a little, knowing I probably couldn't get it back off if I needed to move it. I'll keep that removal tutorial in mind if the need arises.
