J&M Herp Shack
now...i know that snakes get thier calcium from the bones of thier rodents, but i have also read alot about "supplementing" thier rodents with the powder or the liquid dip...

my question is.... could i use the same calcium supplement that i use for my other herps? it is a water additive... removes chlorine and adds a calcium supplement... just wanted to make sure it wouldnt harm my snake b4 i try it... it is called "calcimize"... http://www.petsmart.com/global/prod...<>ast_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1111778009540

Kathy Love suggests only supplementing periodically. She says not every feeding and that's the nutri-bac, not just calcium. Corns don't have the calcium needs that some reptiles do, so I would be careful with excessive calcium. That also can lead to problems.

I don't think that snakes need any more calcium than from the mice or rats unless maybe breeding females. Of course it probably can't hurt to do it maybe every third or fourth feeding.

I have never found the need to supplement healthy snakes, of any species, in my collection. The only time I would consider supplements would be with an animal that is not doing well for some reason....

I have never used any calcium supps with any of my snakes either. I did at one time have a liquid vitamin that I would squirt on the mice every couple of feedings once my BP constricted it, but I cant seen to find it anymore.

As long as you are feeding healthy rodents to your snakes I don't see any need to use supplements. I have never used any with any of my snakes.

yes!

I have the same Calcimize thing...I wasn't sure about giving it to my snake either..But the people at the pet store, and my uncle (who is in love with snakes and owns a few) said that it couldn't hurt him...But they could always be wrong...x_x I just hope that they aren't.

He’s a cold-blooded killer, and he lies a lot… Disregard most of his information..

The only reasons I say this is because of a huge dispute we had over the last few days uncovering a lot of lies and fake stories. We found out that R_A has killed 3 snakes in a short period of time and asked plenty of dumb questions, which we have figured to cause a huge dispute. He uses other Screen name to make the argument larger that is the reason we say this, we have just lost trust and respect for the time being.

o_O

But even I said it was a good idea, I've been using it on Hector for like 2 months..And he hasn't gotten sick or anything...or died..

Poor snakes..x_X HE shouldn't be allowed to own any, if he can't take care of them properly.

But I'm afraid we do, with the exception of the third one because you just changed your story on it today (chemicals now instead of parasites)....unless you're lying about the other 2 too....in which case, you're right, we don't know how they died.

RA, I think you should take DAND's advice and silently observe for awhile..

Due to your recent posts I doubt anyone who is frequently involved with this site is going to seriously consider anything you have to say.
In fact, you seem to be just pissing people off, even when you're giving (what you consider to be) sincere advice.

If you want to be a respected contributing member of this site I think you're going to have to give it LOTS of time. Seems as though the correlation of your posts and the "Fluffy Incident" being brought up is just a bit too high to ignore.

okay... i wasnt asking if i should supplement her, i know they dont need extra supplements, i was asking if it would hurt to put an additive in the water, (its not like they acutally drink that much), that not only removes chlorine (which CANT be good for her), but also adds a little calcium... any thoughts?

To bring it back to the topic at hand.....

I dip the mouses butt in a little calcium powder every so often (perhaps once a month or so) of my adults and every 2nd feed for the small ones on pinks. From my obrervations and im my humble opinion, calcium suplimentation does no harm and in my thoery, it will be beneficial to the snakes, especially the females who will be breeding in the future and therefor taking 'some' calcium from their own skeletal system to form the shells.

I'm not sure about the liquid calcium product. I clean my waterbowls so often that I'd feel like I was throwing away all the good stuff, so I'd probably forego that and stick with the powder myself. The powder wasn't bought for the snakes BTW. I forgot to give it to the guy along with all the other stuff when he bought my chameleon and now I figure it's worth more in my snakes than being tossed in the bin, so I'll dip-butts til it's used up.

From what I've read on a few posts here, calcium in large quantities can be harmful. I would stay away from supplementing the water. My snakes actually drink quite a bit of water (probably more than you realize). Chlorine dissipates in water within a day or two, especially if placed in sunlight, so you might be better off just putting a quart of water out to sit overnight. The other thought is to use bottled water. The water here is treated with Chloramine, so I can't use tap water at all for my snakes.
