Ranco thermostat question/help!!!!!

Okay so I have upgraded from my crappy rheostat to the ranco etc 111000 thermostat that comes with a six plug power strip. I plugged my uth's into the powerstrip and powerstrip into the wall, set thermostat to fahrenheit, S1 temp to 86 degrees, dif 1 to 1 since I have NO Clue what that is, and have it set to h1 for heat, but my uths are now way hot like 100 degrees. I've done something wrong...but what? I want the arm end temps to stay at 86 so why is it so hot?

Don't get mad but stupid question how/where are you using the probe?
I can at least answer the dif. That means it will allow the temp to vary by 1 degree before kicking in.
I would just keep messing around with it but if the probe is in the right place it should be shutting off when the temp hits the right degrees. Maybe UTH is not responding as fast because it works different from heat tape and holds the temps longer?

Thanks for helping fast Jen now it is reading 90 degress, but set at 86 with a 1 degree differential though my temp gun says 84.8 on the bottom of the cage under the substrate. The probe I put under one of the cages where it reads the 90 so it seems weird my temp gun is reading a few degrees less, but I guess all in all the temps are fine now and it was just taking awhile for the uth's to cool down. When I acquire a few more snakes I'll be switching over the racks with either heat tape or cable but for now I wanted to make sure my snakes weren't going to overheat.

I just use heat tape, but I love my ranco- I do remember when I was setting it up it took a while with a thermometer in the tubs to get it right, I actually only set mine to 83 so it shuts off when it gets to 84 (the 1 degree dif), The other thing about those is the strips of heat tape or UTH should all be the same size, or the temps can vary a lot from one to the next. I think with the heat tape, they are all getting the same amount of power so a smaller one would get hotter than a longer one. Not sure if that made sense either.

All my UTH's are the same size right now, but yes that makes since though I am wondering if the top of my substrate is too cool now since mine aren't burrowers. They are always in their hides or roaming right on top and those top temps are more like 80 now. I guess I will have to play a little I was most concerned if I should be using the heat or cooling option since I want them heated, but not as hot asss my UTH's would normally get- is yours on the heating or cooling option?

The heat, AFAIK the cooling option is for refrigeration. The rancos are originally made for industrial applications, I think if you used the cooling option you would set the temp on the low end you wanted and it would turn on the refrigerating device if it got warmer than that? Instead of the opposite way like we use it to turn OFF the heat device when it gets warmer than the set range.

Thanks jen you have totally calmed my nerves I thought I was slightly LDA or something but it looks like I did it right:)
