Rat snake question

I have a question in regards to my rat snake's behavior. I am having to keep him in a "holding tank" for a few days because the glass to his vivarium cracked and I can't afford a new one until later this week. His holding tank is much smaller than the 37 gallon vivarium he is used to, and I have noticed that ever since then, he has become very defensive and snippy whenever I try to pick him up.
Could this be because he feels crowded in his holding tank since it is so small? He was fed recently so I don't think that is the problem. I am assuming he is unhappy with having been removed from his "normal" home and placed in something much smaller but not 100% sure.

He's probably just confused by being taken out of his territory. Does he have some of his hides in the new place? It might not hurt to cover three sides of his viv with towels to make him more comfortable.
