Rats or Mice?

ILoveGreen

Down to 2 Corn Snakes!
Someone on another forum told me that Rats are more fatty......then someone else said Rats are better. Hmmm what do you guys/girls think?

I had to order weaned rats instead of large mice because they were out at the time. They are exacty the same size.:eatpointe

If you are buying your rats and mice it really won't matter if you feed rats for a little while. I have never seen any study that says rats are fatter than mice. I would bet adult mice would have about the same fat content as adult rats. But you are comparing adult mice to rat pups. That is different. Pups are still nursing. They very well may be fatter. But again, pups will be fine until Edna can get more adult mice.

I figured it would be ok for now anyways. But I didn't think about the weaning rats just getting off of their mothers milk.....thanks :)

I tried Googling it for a long time- I knew it was out there. I tried searching on cs.com, too, because I know I've posted it before. No luck. Finally my brain dished up the fact that I'd seen it on a feeder site- wait- Rodent Pro! and then it was simple to find.

I feed all mice except I have one adult corn that eats alternating meals of two or three rat pups because larger prey items make him regurge. And Big Jake at 1200 grams could be eating rats but reportedly doesn't like them, and I haven't tried him.

That is interesting. The adult rat has considerably more fat than an mouse but the juvenile mouse has more fat than a rat. I would not have guessed that.

I would like to feed f/t rats because Bobo's Mama sells them to me for really cheap compared to Petco's f/t mice. Unfortunately Shesha has decided to be a picky eater and keeps refusing the rat pinks. She's probably trying to tell me that she's had enough pinkies in her life and prefers food with fur.

Since I raise a couple rat colonies, I feed both. I have a snake that only eats live and likes to "taste" them a few times before striking, so I feel safer giving her rat pups as opposed to mice that may get defensive. The rat pups haven't a clue what's going on until it's too late... She's really active so they haven't put any fat on her...

My big guy has been getting small rats because mice haven't been large enough for him. I've not been able to get weaned mice from my local store, so the rest (other than Gunn, who is STILL on pinkies) are currently getting rat fuzzies. I'd like to move them back, but it all depends on when the store has some available.

Me and my friend ague this day in day out. I say a healthy snake is a happy snake 40 grams of rodent is 40 grams of rodent.

It could go back and forth with what has more but nobody really knows whats better. Throw them on the scales even if you got a BIG rat it has more poop and pee inside of it then 4 mice. The mice would have more calcium and acctual "gut" matter insted of fat. I would think protein over fat anyday but who knows?

Rodent is a rodent in all honestly it doesnt matter to your snake or he/she wont eat it.

Um yeah. And 4 pounds of fast food is EXACTLY the same as 4 pounds of a balanced diet. As long as your kid eats it, it MUST be healthy. right??

I have a female corn and a male. The guy I got them from fed the female mice and the male rats of equal size...the male is very fat,so I think rats have more fat.I hav a colony of african soft fur rats and I am going to use them as feeders.
