Reptile Shows

after attending...

the show in philly i could see where it would ultimately be a hassle. there's so many vendors there and while i saw them all i knew i was only going to buy from one and i had my purchase pre-arranged. if i had it my way...i would have gone, got my snake, paid for it and bounced, but because there was an admission fee i decided to check out the rest of the show. i could've bought a creamsicle corn from five or six different breeders, but i knew i was going to make a purchase from cornutopia. it's not that i didn't trust that i would've gotten a healthy snake from another breeder, i just knew i trusted the breeder i chose a whole lot more. she was the only one who really took the time to help me pick out the right snake for me. i assume that several other attendees went knowing what they wanted to purchase and from who they would be buying from.

Bear in mind that many of the shows we were doing cost us around $1,000 just to walk in the door and set up the tables. That all comes out of the profit margin. On top of that, yes, people are all looking for bargains, so sometimes you have to shave some off of the price to make some sales there. On top of that, we automatically get at least 5 days knocked out of the feeding schedule, so we have to work like mad before and after to try to make up for that shortfall. A couple of times we did back to back weekend shows and it nearly killed us. Having to get EVERY animal fed in three days is a killer, no matter how you look at it. I will NOT do that again.....

When I look at the figures, it is much more cost effective to contact a wholesaler and sell him a couple of hundred snakes at a substantial discount. The income works out to be the same for us, yet we don't have to be all stressed out doing a show over a weekend and all the attendant hassles of getting there and back. You have no idea how worrisome it can be just hoping that your vehicle doesn't break down in mid August in mid Florida with many $$$ worth of animals in it! How long do you think it would take sitting in the hot sun waiting for a tow truck before everything was dead?

This is getting to be more and more the direction I think I will be going in the future.

I kinda agree....

I also went to the Philly show and I thought it was quite good. Even know I probably was going to buy a snake from cornutopia, i wanted to look around as well. It was a little crowded for my taste but not too bad. I do agree that there were a ton of turtles and ball pythons for my likeing. All in all, for the 13 dollar admission fee (had a 2 off coupon :)) I got a beaut of a snake from Kathy Love and my other little one sexed for me for free. Beats paying 40.00 for a vet visit. I will be attending again next year...

Speaking of wholesaling, do you wholesale to anyone in Tallahassee? Just curious...

I do sell to Pet Paradise every once in a while, but not in any great quantities. Most of my stuff gets shipped out and the rest sold at the shows we do attend.

I was just in there not two mins ago getting mice for my corns and bp's. He's got some really nice animals, it's just a shame that a lot of them are covered in mites. The mites are no problem to get rid of, but the crap they carry just bah, I'd much rather not deal with that. Really nice guy though. He's almost got my routinely Thursday order down.
