ReptiTemp 500R

I know that the ReptiTemp 500R has dual receptacles and able to control two heating devices at once, but can it do so independently?

I need my heat mat on the warm side to hit 85 and my lamp to hit 75 on the cool side... I don't want the lamp to shut off after the heat pad hits 85...

It controls whatever device the probe is at, and matches the other device. i have only used it with two UTHs, have no idea what happens with two completely different devices of different wattages and types of output.

The way you are describing it wouldn't give you a heat gradient of warm side/cool side. It would maintain the heat at where the probe was placed. It would in turn shut your light out when it reached the appropriate temps. I have a couple of these in use and they work rather well. I use them on my hatchling racks and 1 ReptiTemp controls 2 racks easily. If you want to use 2 different heating devices like that you will need 2 ReptiTemps to do this. But unless your viv is on the larger size (not huge but bigger then a 10 gallon) I think it may be difficult to maintain the heat gradient you are trying to achieve. Hope this helps.

ok, sounds good...

I have a 50 high (20hx36lx16w) and have been able to set up a heat gradient, however it's taken a lot to tame my medium Exo Terra Desert UTH. With 2 floor tiles stacked above the UTH on the glass (one of which is very thick that I paid 4 dollars for) and a thin piece of cardboard, I still hit 92F at the hottest spot.

With it being so difficult to hit the optimum temperature in the first place (I'm shooting for 85F), I definitely need a thermostat since the temps here in Edmonton fluctuate so much.

I guess the ReptiTemp was made without heat gradients on mind...

Thanks again guys.

Actually it will help you create the gradient for your snake. The ReptiTemp does not come with an analog dial for you to set it exactly but you would have to use it in conjunction with a digital thermometer. With the way you described you have your set-up you would need 2 ReptiTemps and 2 digital thermometers. You would place the probes from the ReptiTemp and the thermometer in the same exact spots in the viv so you can manually adjust it until you get the temps you are trying to achieve. The only drawback to this is when the end with the lamp reached proper temps it would shut off. If you would like to have some lighting without it raising temps I would suggest a small fluorescent strip light. Hope this helps. Just remember that it is up to you to practice the correct husbandry skills for your snake. It's not like he can slither over to the woodstove and toss another log on the fire on those cold Canadian nights of yours. :grin01:

I think I'd allow a bigger gradient then 75-85. More like 70-85. My corns spend most of there time on the cool end of their vivs where the temp ranges from 65-70. I don't know if not being able to go lower than 75 would be unhealthy but from my experience they are more comfortable at lower temps.

The purpose of multiple plugs on most thermostats is to set a temp on one UTH, and have other enclosures match that.

Some of the more expensive thermostats do allow you to set two separate temps, but they are $$$.
