Either you have not registered on this site yet, or you are registered but have not logged in. In either case, you will not be able to use the full functionality of this site until you have registered, and then logged in after your registration has been approved.

Registration is FREE, so please register so you can participate instead of remaining a lurker....

Sorry about the strictness of this requirement, but it is necessary to block spammers and scammers at the door as much as possible.

Reputation Points

Well, for a variety of reasons, I have disabled that "reputation" feature on this site. Didn't seem to be worth the confusion it generated anyway.

I wasn't ever too terribly confused about it, and it certainly did enlighten me about which people to steer clear from on the forum. You pretty much guess that people with 500+ posts with a reputation thats non-existant is pretty much shooting it out their arse when it comes to posting.

It would have been nice in light of the recent "problem children" on the forum to integrate the reputation points with a method of "muting" since we don't have any moderators besides you, Rich. Kind of a self-policing thing. If you keep on long enough and rack up enough negative reputation, you're no longer allowed to post or some other silencing device.

Sides, it was always nice receiving positive points and comments from folks who enjoyed a post or a picture I put up. Without having to go through the whole rigamerole of a PM.

So...if you got rid of it because of people complaining that other people were mean; given the member-base of this forum, if you get negative feedback you pretty much deserve it, imho. We don't go out of our way to be hateful to people. If they don't like droves of negative feedback, then they should mind their manners and their tongues.

And the confusion thing would have easily been cleared up with a legend telling what each color box meant what. ;)

Just my 2 cents..

Personally I think the reputation system is great! It especially shows who's who to beginners of our hobby and newbies to this forum. Not really saying who the "in crowd" is but rather which advice to take. Case in point, if someone (with a low rep or no rep at all) offers advice that contadicts the advice of people who have a good reputation! The system is certainly open enough for those that care about their reputation amongst their peers, that it could be done!

I, myself have gotten quite a few "points" with comments from newbies saying that I have helped them a great deal! Although, I didn't recieve points because the newbie had no reputation built up, it's definately a nice feeling when you know you have helped someone out!

I was never very confused either. I did some reseach early on and posted my results and answered just about any questions that were asked about it. For someone new and didn't know how the system worked, it could be remedied by a simple linking to the thread where it was explained. Which has been done on several occasions.

It's a crying shame that one or two people can ruin it for the whole bunch of us.

I agree with Misty, being a forum without moderators, I think the rep point system certainly does have a way of "policing" our corn snake home!

I'd hope that you would reconsider putting the rep system back in place, Rich. I think it is a great addition to our community and I don't feel I stand alone in my thinking.

Sincerely,
Quigs

You voiced my sentements exactally Quigs And Misty, I think it was great to give and recieve the feedback.

Unfortunately the system is abused to: I like you, and i don't like you. I don't see the use of having a good reputation because 'people like your pictures' ect. I don't mind if it's here or not. But it did rouse a lot of anger and confusion.

I am always open to hear discussions on a matter. But you need to be aware of what my choices are.

When I see a system being abused, I have three choices:
  1. Eliminate the system being abused
  2. Eliminate the *perceived* abusers of the system
  3. Ignore it all and let YOU all deal with it

Which of the three do you think I should choose to do?

I did not put this site up with the hopes it would give me more work to do. So I will do whatever is necessary to keep this site from becoming a headache to me.

i would like to state my agreement with those who wrote in support of the rep pts...as a newbie it was very helpful to me once i figured out the system...& i hope that people will not abuse it if it is reinstated! :wavey:

I liked the system and would value it's return.

Anyone who spends any time on the board knows who the idiots are and makes their own decicision on whom to ignore.

I know I certainly appreciated the comments I got on my posts, and this:
a) helped me know what was useful out of the comments I put forward
b) gave me positive feedback to continue helping out the question-askers, and hence aid in keeping the board a thriving community.

Out of your three options Rich I would either go for 2 or 3, however as 2 would involve more work for you, I would suggest 3.

I am sorry that so many people have abused the system, not just in only giving points to their buddies, but I hope you can recognise that the system has value for those who use it as intended.

OK, I'll make a deal with you all. I will reinstate the reputation system, but I don't want to hear about problems some people may make with it. You will just have to deal with it on your own.

Is that a deal?

I consider the actual site to be exceptional..............the reputation points were, potentially, an aid to a 'first time' viewer.

I read & re-read numerous 'threads' over an 18 month period prior to asserting a voice on a subject & I isolated the 'post-every-five-minute' (with nothing to say) people to those that may not post numerically high, but, often, have valued information.

I had no idea that the system had been reduced to a 'buddy' clique - by some individuals.

However, I too enjoyed it's presence & was dismayed to see its execution.

Re-instated........we shall see where it goes from here.

Thanks Rich,

I shall continue to enjoy the use of the system as I have in the past. I appreciate you listening to us.

This admin screen might help explain things...

Maybe this screen of admin options that I can set for the reputation system will explain things a little better about what makes the reputation factors.
