rheostat/thermostat?

hey guys so does anyone have any experience with the Zilla rheostat or Zilla temperature controller? if so were they good products that can be relied on?

I have a BAH thermostat that has been working fine for seven years. It's the same as the Zilla, just branded differently.

Years back, I was actually jumped all over by a retailer/member here for mentioning that mine worked fine. So far the thermostat has outlasted both his active membership here and his business....

There are also other well reviewed and inexpensive thermostats I see regularly recommended here. Based on the quality of thermostat available at these low price points I wouldn't even consider a rheostat...

Hope this helps you out some...

Hey- BAH stands for Big Apple Herp, which is where I got mine from. Several companies sell that same thermostat under different brand names. The only difference between mine and the Zilla you were looking at literally is the stickers on it.

The only reason I got mine via the internet is that these were not available in stores back then. You should be fine either way, or with some of the other affordable thermostats recommended here. A quick search will net you some more options...

I've only had one Zilla thermostat, and it never failed on me. Good thermostat, was 2 years old when I got it and I had it for around a year or so after that. They're the same as the Alife thermostat (available from the Bean Farm).

A BAH thermostat would be from Big Apple Herp (http://www.bigappleherp.com). Looks like their thermostat is a bit different than the Zilla/Alife, but same concept and overall look.

The one "cheap" thermostat I would genuinely avoid is the ZooMed. I have yet to hear about one of those lasting more than a year before failing. I had a few of them at one point, had them in use for around 6 months to a year each, and later gave them to a friend upon downsizing my snake collection. She later told me that one or two of the (can't remember for sure) 2 or 3 I gave her had failed. Don't know what happened with the last one.

I also can't help but mention that thermostats are one thing that you most definitely get what you pay for. The Alife/Zilla thermostat is a good one for the price, hardy and does the job, but the more money you're willing to spend the more precise control, reliability, and downright peace of mind you'll get. I LOVE my Herpstat, and have been trying to remind myself to save up to buy another because I'd much rather spend $200 on another Herpstat II than spend $60 on two cheaper thermostats. (Fortunately I haven't needed more than 3 thermostats--my Ranco and the Herpstat II, which is a 2-in-1 t-stat-- to control all my heat pads just yet!)

Just to clarify my earlier comment, "my" BAH unit is identical to the current Zilla unit. Since then, you are correct that BAH now has slightly changed the case.

I pretty sure it's still exactly the same internals as the Zilla, with the outer case customized so BAH can have it's own look...

Either way mine is still going strong after 7 years, although I agree that the higher end units are great too.

No worries Justin.

It's just an educated guess, but I thing BAH was losing sales on these once Zilla and others started branding them for retail. Why bother with mail order when you can get then same thing around the corner lol.

The one on their website looks like the same unit with a jazzed up adjustment dial....
