The wonders of animation.
I'd like to post this thread in memory of Biscuit.. My Jird.

I don't know what was wrong with him.. He was fine yesterday, but today, he just,.. gave up.
I think it was a stroke..

He died today at 7.00pm..
He died in my arms.. All warm.. and cosy.
I'll miss you Biscuit... :'( :'( :'(

I'm utterly devestated...

:'(

Sorry man! i cant beleave it! was that your new snake? omg... RIP!
No.. He was a Jird which is a species of Gerbil..

But thanks.

And thank you Lennycorn...

I just don't know how his girl (Jazz, who lives in the tank with him) is going to cope...

Oh, I'm sorry...They don't live very long, do they. That's the trouble with all the little rodents. At least he was with you when he went.

Nanci

Sorry for your loss, Dru.

(*cues up Duke Ellington's "Solitude" to comfort Jazz*)

regards,
jazz

I keep gerbils, too, and it's horrible when they go. I am attached to each and every one of them, no matter how long they have been with me. Take comfort in interacting with your remaining Jird, and remember, she is grieving his loss too- so pay extra attention to her over the next few weeks. It will help both of you.

Thank you, although it's hard now, she refuses to be handled, she has started to bite, she's clawing at the side of her tank... It's terrible, but thank you.

I lost a beloved aunt last year and believe me, there were days (and still ARE days) where I feel like clawing at the sides of my "enclosure" and biting the hands that reach for me, too. Fortunately, I am blessed with an extraordinarily patient significant other who is always there to remind me of all that is good in my life.

You need to be that for your pet... patience is the key. Best of luck, and my sympathies. If you ever need to talk and or vent or share stories, I am only a PM away!

Jazz died.. tonight... around 7pm..

I have no idea why...

...damn this is devastating.

Ohh I am soo sorry. So now Im guessing it was some sort of disease that spread to both.

That really stinks.

I was thinking that too, but it might have been the fact that she was with Biscuit most of her life... :(

I would still disinfect the cage, but in my experience with gerbils who are life-long buddies, once one goes the other is very quick to follow. I think they just can't handle being alone- it really stresses them out, and stress leads to overall break down of the immune system and all sorts of nastiness. So sorry to hear of your loss... you have my sympathy.

What a shame, I've had the same thing happen in the past when I bred gerbils. With our degus, we had 2 brothers and when one died the other definately pined, so we had him out of his cage being cuddled and pampered for about a week or so, until he cheered up. It could have just as easily been an illness they both had though, the little rodents get sick and die too quick to get them to a vet in time.
I hope you feel better about it soon, I'm sure the jirds had a happy life with you

(from Katt) I'm sorry my condolances are later in coming, but offer them regardless. It's difficult to loose ANY animal we feel close to and enjoy daily life with. We lost our first corn within 6 days, I lost a beloved cat after 8 long years, and (most recently) just before x-mas we lost a 5 month old kitten, all to reasons unknown. Sometimes I think the not knowing why is the worst, because you always wonder "was there something I missed? something I should've done?" Take peace in the fact that yours were loved in life and comforted in passing. Take care.
