Rodent Feeder Suppliers - My observations..

Taceas

USW = UB313
These are my own personal observations into two different rodent feeder supply companies. I'm sure there are people out there who will disagree with my views, but I'm sure everyone has different quality experiences with either of these companies.

RodentPro:

I have been an exclusive customer of RodentPro for a year or so now. And I've noticed in that time a decline in customer service and the quality of rodents I end up getting. You would figure living 25 miles from their business, I would tend to get a little bit better service.

Customer service: I understand they are a busy business, catering to people all over the country but some things just really get under my skin. They are terribly slow to respond to e-mails, sometimes 2 days before I get a reply. Generally they don't seem to like being asked to ship using another shipping company other than Airborne Express. I can understand they probably have a contract, but in the same right, Airborne cannot seem to find my house. Out of 7 orders, I think 3 have found their way without the driver having to call me at work and get directions. I've even had the driver disregard the simple directions, and simply drop it off at the post office, of which the postal employees don't like them doing, because they have to sign for the package. That and they ship using Airborne's 2nd Day shipping, I always seem to need my rodents yesterday, so having to wait an extra day is inconvenient. That and they send this huge, hard to open box for even the smallest of orders.

Quality: Before I thought RodentPro's feeders were top notch, compared to the frozen feeders I can buy at a pet shop. But just this afternoon (feeding day) as I was opening a new bag of weaned rats I was appalled at the quality of the rodents. As I picked through the bag, they were all urine soaked, had feces clung to them, many of them appeared to have been squished, as they had brain matter and blood leaking out their nose and mouth. And they looked as though I got last year's stock that they scraped up from the bottom of the freezer. A few of the 20 actually looked like they had been put through a meat tenderizer, flattened with indentations all over, broken legs and tails, etc. It takes that much longer to bend the rodents back to a shape that the snakes can swallow easily, I feel like I have to play with a Barbie doll bending legs this way and that.

Big Cheese Rodent Factory:

Today I got my first order through BCRF before noon, and can I say...wow.

Customer Service: I e-mailed for a price quote, and within an hour I got a courteous reply. They even asked which shipping company I prefer for "over-night" delivery. Go figure. =)

Quality: The box and packaging was the first tip of a much better quality product within. The box was a more reasonable size to handle, not 24x24x12 like RodentPro's. The insulation was also a better quality, as it was thicker and didn't leave me with an itchy feeling after digging through trying to find the rodents. The amount of dry ice enclosed was remarkable. I got this huge chunk of ice that I think will last about a week or so.

And best of all, the rodents are great. They're clean, not a piece of litter anywhere, no urine or feces that I can see. And best of all, they're already vacuum-packed for me. So I don't have to go through the hassle to do it when I receive the order.

I would like to hear some feedback as to what others think on the matter. =)

I, too, have bought from RodentPro for a year or so. Recently, I have also noticed a decline in quality. I thought that I must have just gotten a bad batch or two. A couple of orders ago, I received 1 bag of rats that simply reeked of death. You know...like after one has set out for a few days. They had that distinctive odor. They were even black inside. I contacted RodentPro, to which I got no response. The next week I got another shipment from them containing a new bag of rats. If they had contacted me as I asked, then they would have known I was planning to place another order the following week. They would have saved themselves some shipping costs.

In my last order, my rat pinkies were covered with "trash." Some of the other rats were dirty, too. They were covered with bedding, feces, and urine.

I think I am going to have to give another company a try...
I guess the quality of the other companies may be worth the extra cost after all...

Same observations

I too used RodentPro and have been happy with them. My second order, placed on Jan 1, had mice with feces and strong urine smell. I rise the mice a while before soaking them and it helps
I ordered once from Big Cheese Rodent Factory a few months ago and are very happy with their service and quality of their mice. I have only ordered pinkies from them but I will probably try other sizes when I have to order again.
I was wondering Taceas. If you only live 25 miles from RodentPro, why not drive there and pickup your order instead of using Airborne express delivery? Just wondering.

I always ordered from The Mouse Factory and was always happy. I was tempted by the prices of Rodent Pro so I tried them out for an order. I was not impressed at all, my rodents were filthy and I did not like how they were packed. The animals take up twice as much freezer space. I RAN back to The Mouse Factory, never to order from Rodent Pro again. I just put in an order today and the gal informed me of all specials and is always super nice, she gave me the 1000+ quantity discount even though I did not quite make 1000 rodents. Nothing can beat thier customer service, thier quality animals, or thier super packing.

Price had me with RodentPro for quite a while, but I am a reconfirmed BCRF man, now! The quality, the service, and the attention to detail are all excellant reasons to support this great service company. Definitely: Good People!

:D

I am with Taceas I have been very pleased with rodent pro up until the order I got last week the rodents were smaller than they have ever been. Snakes that could barley take an adult mouse I fed a rat pup they sent me and the adult mice are tiny compared to what I am used to getting from them and yes covered in feces, urine and bedding as well. I think getting to be as big as they have has caused the quality to go down hill. I guess I will try BCRF next time

feeders

I sent Email to Rodentpro with some questions about a month ago and never got a responce. So I ordered from BCRF. the mice looked great . you would have a hard time getting a better price.I ordered 3,000 mice and got pinkies for only .14 cents each. That order should last me about a year ,but I will use them agian.

BIG CHEESE

I to am a Big Cheese convert. I used to order from RodentPro, but the shipping to TX was killing me. Then I called Big Cheese (they are only about 3 hours from me), and they said they can ship ground for less than $20.00. My last order was sent ground, and took 2 days to get here. That didn't matter, there was still a huge piece of dry ice in the box (they could have easily gone another 2 days), and all the rodents were frozen solid! Keep in mind that all this was done in the Texas summer!

Re:

I thought it was just me that was noticing a decline in service and quality at RodentPro. But obviously not.

BeneciaBrian: I was wondering Taceas. If you only live 25 miles from RodentPro, why not drive there and pickup your order instead of using Airborne express delivery? Just wondering.

I have contacted them on every order I made, asking if I could save on the shipping (~$35) and just pick the order up. Each time I am turned away with some ruddy excuse, such as: "You may carry any disease or virus to our facility which could compromise our production." And I thought, this is a damn rodent facility, not an AIDS ward. While I understand I may have a cold at the time, I don't see how that is going to affect the mice in the barn if I pick my order up in the driveway. I must have some potent germs, thats all I can say.

CornCrazy: Yeah, my weaned rats didn't smell of death that I noticed (then again, the smell of urine was so strong), but their bellies were black and jello-y like you find in a decaying rodent. Definately not appetizing to me. The skin was peeling off when I'd try and grab it when the hemostats, the feet looked as though they'd been chewed on by cagemates. One was missing the skin on it's tail. It's like they packaged up the dead ones for a bargain sale. It took a bit of coaxing to get even my aggressive feeders to eat. Had I thought better at the time, I would have taken some pictures and posted them. Maybe next time if I remember.

Anyway, I'm glad I'm not alone in this. And until I am convinced otherwise, BCRF will be getting my business from here on. Yes, they may be more expensive, but their quality and service more than makes up for it.

Thanks for your post on another thread Darin, your link to BCRF is what got me switched. =D

Taceas...

That's unbelievable that they wouldn't let you pick them up! That kind of concerns me. I mean...maybe if their business is at their home...then I could understand it a little. I, personally, wouldn't be able to stand the smell of that many rodents and other animals near my home, though.

Anyway, if that is the case, then they should have just told you that. If the "factory" isn't at their home, then them not letting you pick them up is silly. You didn't have to go anywhere the live animals!

I definitely think I am going to try the BCRF next time!

I have noticed that the quality is not as good as when I first ordered from RodentPro. When I order again I'll give BCRF a try.
Thanks for all the info:D

I'm Glad

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
I ordered 100 fuzzies and 100 hoppers.
Although the fuzzies are fat and look pretty good the hoppers all look terrible. There is absolutely no bulk to them. They look like they were starved.
Their stomachs are caved in and there are "pellets" stuck to probably more then half of them.
Not only are they thin, have feces on them and just look terrible half of them burst open once they are warm.
I am used to a few busting on occaision but not this pecentage, it is getting rediculous.
I will be changing suppliers when these are gone !!

Jimmy

I've had the same problem with the hoppers, the last two orders.
The have to be rinsed off because some of my snakes won't eat them, they stink so bad of urine......Yuck:mad:

Well...

Maybe someone needs to point RodentPro in the direction of this thread. I'm sure they don't want this kind of publicity. Maybe it would help them to get their act "cleaned" up.

Re:

I thought about that. But then again, if they don't answer an e-mail about their prices, sales, etc...then why would they care about this? I'm sure they have more than enough other clients to more than make up for the tiny dent we'll make in their profits.

To be honest, it's going to take a lot more to get me to switch back now. If they didn't care about the product they were sending out before, then I doubt they'll change all that much in the long run. But that's me, always the pessimist.

Right now, I think the only thing they have going for them is their great website. User-friendly and convenient, with pictures showing the "average" size of the rodents they carry.

I e-mailed them a few months ago about getting a job with them, but no good. At least the product I'd be packaging and sending out would be the quality I wanted to receive myself, clean and tidy. If I wanted litter and urine, I'd have gone to a local pet store and picked out of their feeder troughs.

Then again, what can it hurt? E-mail away. =)

Pictures I took of my rodent selection in the freezer:

RodentPro:

Weaned Rats: Notice the yellow tinge, pieces of stuff, and the distorted shape of cramming freshly killed into a vacuum bag, freezing, and then packaged into a regular Ziploc bag for shipment.

RodentProWeanedRats.JPG

Pinkie Rats: Can we say, yum? These look as though they've been put through a meat grinder, or chewed on before death. Dead things don't bleed last time I checked.

RodentProRatPinks.JPG

Big Cheese:

Hoppers and pinkies. They've been frozen straight and then vacuum packed to avoid misshapen bodies. They're also very clean, I only counted one turd in the hopper bag.

BigCheeseHoppersandPinks.JPG

And here is a pic of my own weaned rats from March, I freeze mine in a glass Pyrex 13x9 baking dish. That way they're straight, and the arms are pinned back when frozen, and then bag them up, and vacuum-pack. They're easier to package that way, and upon thawing don't need to be manipulated or mutilated (cutting legs off) in order to be easily eaten.

Just shows you the difference in quality I see when I open up a bag from different suppliers, and even my own stock.

In all fairness I did not email them about the yucky Hoppers. After getting the same quality the second time I felt that was my answer. I've been happy with the other sizes of mice and the rats. I have not had the problems that others have listed with the exception of the Hoppers. But after reading others testimonials and seeing the pics I don't want to take a chance on another order from them. Obviously their quality is not consistant.

I'm sure they won't miss my little bit of business. I boycotted McDonalds years ago and it hasn't hurt them one bit ;)

I have to say that I've never ordered from the Big Cheese Rodent Factory. I did get an order from Rodent Pro once, the quality at that time (a year or two ago) was ok, nothing special. I got an order from The Mouse Factory sometime this spring and all I can say is, "Wow." Very impressive. The fuzzy rats were unbelievably fat, the highest quality I've seen (including my own home-grown rats). I got hopper rats and they were packaged on a styrofoam plate, aligned symmetrically and straight with limbs all pulled back in 'ready to be consumed' pose. I have not found a single shaving or pellet on them.....not one. No urine staining. The price is a bit higher, iirc, but I have to say that they get 10 stars out of a possible 4. I'm usually not that easily impressed, but these people impressed me.

Packaging was excellent, they could probably have stayed in the box for a week. :p

Oh, and most noticeable.....these rodents don't smell.....at all.

I get my rodents locally most of the time, but if I had to go to shipped mice only....there's not a doubt in my mind who I'd pick.

My $.03.

Well I have never had any problem with Rodent Pro. The only screw up was with Airborne, when they decided not to leave the package when nobody was home. I called Kevin and he got a new batch out the same day i called him. My normal orders are around $150-200. I have always been very happy with both the customer service and with the mice/rats as well. I will order from Rodentpro.com as long as I have to buy my own rats/mice.

Although the way my rats are breeding now, I am very close to having enough to feed on a weekly basis
