Sad News, I got accepted into college

I graduate high school this year, and i've been accepted into a college only two hours from home, but the sad thing is i'll be living on campus and they don't allow snakes. at the mot they allow fish, so i won't be getting another corn for awhile, but i'll still be hanging around here and fine-tuning my corn snake husbandry knowledge. it's still sad to realize i won't be getting corns or able to work on a butter stripe breeding attempt for quite some time. :(

Well, congrats on getting accepted into college! I know that in 2-3 years I will be going through the same thing as you. I will have to give up the hobby for probably around 4 years. It may seem bad now but college is way more important than any snakes, IMO!

Just make sure you keep in touch while you are there and enjoy it!
 
Congratulations, college is a good thing, no more corns for a while is sad. I'm glad you posted this because when young people 13-16 want old timers to convince their parents corn snakes are good (which they are). We always ask are you ready for a 20 year commitment, i.e. taking it to college, they always say Oh! I'll have it with me forever. The reality is dorms don't allow pets and most Freshman away from home have to spend first year in dorms.

Bah,dumb rule! My college allowed snakes :D (pretty much anything that lived in a tank and wasn't dangerous was allowed!)

Okay but seriously, congrats! Something to treat yourself with when you graduate :)

Plenty of time to train up your little sister! Plus I promised I'd care for anything you absolutely couldn't bear to part with, till you were done.
 
Kevin, congratulations. Do you know what you want to major in yet? I suggest something that pays well, so you can have more money for snakes!

I remember you saying that, and I am sure I will keep that in mind! And actually my little sister likes them!

And as Nanci asked...what type of field are you going into?
 
I'm confused, our college you dont like, leave home.. you just visit it through the day, our high school is our second school from our infant school,

does that mean you guys have a third school to get through? wow thats insane!

not too bad though, I go to college every friday for childcare and ICT (photo editing) and I have made about 30 new friends, so hopefully you will! :D

Well, you could do the "don't ask, don't tell" policy and just bring a snakie or two with you and simply keep it to yourself...:p

Then again, you may have a roommate. Most first year students do. And that person may not be partial to reptiles. Ok, well, there goes that...

But! You *could* see if any teachers in your high school would like them for their classroom. Or, as mentioned, train your sister. Perhaps by the time she's on her way to college, you'll be done & voila! Snakies back to you. :) And, if it's only 2 hours away, she could just be in charge of checking water and doo-doos and leave the rest to you. Then again, I was only 45 mins away while at college, and very rarely did I ever make the effort to return to visit...

I eventually became the recipient of a college kid's adult corn -- his parents got tired of caring for it, so adopted he became by me. My students love visiting with Caramelo. :)

You have a while yet to decide...
 
Congrats! I graduated High School this year as well, but for the next year or two, I will be attending a Jr. College nearby, so it wont be a problem. My plan is to head off in a few years though, and I dont know if I'll be able to take my snakes. Im worried as well. My mom said they could stay here though, but I still want to take them! Its a price you have to pay for the education you need, I guess! Good Luck!
 
I don't know how many snakes you have..but you could contact the school's Biology Dept. and see if they will let you keep your snake in there. Sometimes they are sympathetic and as long as you are the one keeping he and the cage up they might let you. Couldn't hurt to ask at any rate.
 
Thanks guys, i am excited to be going off to college, it's gonna be a change though.

As for my field of study, i want to do a double major (insane but they require the same classes until my final year) in both general sports medicine and athletic training. I started doing it here at high school and i love it.

As for the biology dep't, it's a Christian college, and while it may not be a problem, some Christians have problems with snakes. i personally have no conviction about owning snakes but some people over-react a bit.lol.

Hey Kevin,

Im a Christian as well and I know the whole "Snake Deal". It sucks sometimes,lol. But it still wouldnt hurt to ask! You might luck out and have a teacher like us! You might even get him/her interested in a breeding project and you can keep the Butter Stripe project going. Good Luck!
 
Recently I went back to school to get my Master's, I stayed in the dorms because it was cheap. I took some hamsters in, every one knew I had them. All was well and good until there was a fire drill. Since I could smell smoke it was do I take them out and get fined or let them die in the dorm. I took them out put them in my car, everyone was to busy to see them.
 
When I was living in the dorms at my freshman year at TAMU I kept corns and leos and I never got caught or turned in or in trouble or anything. The most they can make you do is get rid of them, and what I would do is make sure that your RA is either a cool guy or doesn't give a crap and just keep them anyways. Congrats on getting accepted into college though. Where are you going if you don't mind me asking. I was about to go to school only 1.5 hours away but decided to go 15 hours away instead :) Couldn't resist that maroon blood :D

My college had a similar rule. Fish only. So....I took 3 corns and called them fish. It worked very well for quite a while until I started getting a crowd for the weekly fish feedings. Oops.:eek1: That attracted a little too much attention and the heavy hand came down :grabbit: and I had to get rid of them. Good part is I ended up taking them to the biology dept. and they said they would keep them if I became the new curator of the live animal collection. Well, one thing led to another and soon changed my major from computer science to biology and haven't looked back. My paycheck would probably be a lot better if I stayed in the computer science dept but then again I wouldn't get to work with herps for a living.

Ya i don't mind letting you know where i'm going. it's liberty university. I really want to go to Indiana Wesleyan University, but i haven't heard back from them yet. :(


well i have a leopard gecko now, so i may try to take her, see how my RA reacts, and go from there. if he doesn't care, well then maybe i'll be getting a few "eels" for my dry aquariums.
