Safe to use newspaper over Zoo Med heat mat?

Hey guys,

I couldn't seem to find the answer to this one by searching the threads, so here goes: is it safe to use a layer of newspaper over a Zoo Med heat mat mounted to the bottom of a glass cage? The only reason I'm asking is that in the instructions for the heat mat they say you have to use cage carpet over the heat mat and that newspaper isn't safe. I was wondering if this was just another marketing ploy or if it really is Ok. and I'm thinking it would be much easier to clean if I used a layer of newspaper and then aspen on top of that. I'm very curious because I'm getting ready to clean A.J.'s cage for the first time, and I'm thinking that constantly cleaning cage carpet is going to be a real PITA. My heat mat is controlled by a Herpstat, so I don't think it would get too hot for newspaper--I have the warm side set to 85. Any suggestions?

If you have your heat mat on a thermostat (which you should anyways) it will be fine. If your heat mat is hot enough to burn the paper it will burn the crap out of your snake. The heat mat should never get hotter than 98 degrees and that is how hot a human is. So yes you will be fine using paper over it. Not an issue at all.

Heat mat should never get hotter than 90 degrees, not 98.

Ok depending on the type of snake the temp changes I was using body temp as a base. I wasn't being specific to corns.
