Say Hello to My New Little Friend!

Just gorgeous! I love how garters have the "mean" look to them. Great scale close-up! You can really see the detail well.

What a beauty!

Wish I could find stuff like that where I live..but then again the poor things would get tortured by the "chavs". So they're better off where they are.

Connor

What a beauty! It's great that he/she is doing so well in captivity. You might want to do a fecal and treat him since most wild caught garters have large parasite loads from the foods they eat. If he is doing well and not stressed, which he certainly seems to be, then maybe you don't need to.

If you post photos of his tail I might be able to sex him. I find that garters are a little different than corns. You could also post the photos on thamnophis.com . There are a lot of very experienced garter keepers there.

Dean gave you all the info on the enclosure requirements although I think that they tolerate lower and higher temps better than corns. Your home's temp might be enough for him. He will be much more active than a corn and a branch or something to climb might be a good idea but he certainly doesn't need one.

Congrats - he is a beauty.

Thanks for all the additional help and advice Joanna! He/she is just in a temporary tub at the moment since I wasn't sure I was keeping him/her. And once todays meal of 6 medium and large scented F/T pinkies has digested, I'll see about getting some tail photos, if I can keep that tail still enough to get some decent photos!

Six pinkies! My guess just from that is it is a female! My experience is limited but I have only ever had females that would eat like that. She might be gravid! The only thing that doesn't fit is that she just shed but I have seen them shed in the middle of the gestation. Can't wait for those tail shots!

I usually keep 30+ garters in a natural setting viv. The viv size is approx 2 acres. lol They seem to thrive in this natural viv setting and best of all my food costs are $0 per year. They are cool snakes but I have no need to keep them because in the warm times of the year I can walk outside and find a dozen within 15 minutes. They feast on moles around my area. Biggest problem I have is avoiding them with the mower.
