snake girl
well my brother went arround school saying he has a snake now i have the school calling me asking me to bring in my snakes to show off and give a lesson about them. so i agreed to do it for one class, and i beat up my brother too. but what should i talk about. i know somestuff. like breading, what kinds, there age, and vivs but i cant think of anything eles. im only bring two snakes. my little girl and her father, i dont feel confertable bring the brother, and i dont no if its a good idea to go arround and let kids handle them or just look at it. its 8th grade and those kids can be bratty. im bringing in the viv of the father and putting my girl in her carring tank, i have pics of when my girl was in shed, and so im gonna exsplane that too any idea this is a hour long class so help need more ideas

I know someone that knows something about reptile shows, email me and I will see if I can get you two to talk and he may have some good advice;
You might check with your parents also, to see if they need to sign something or go along since technically you are a minor.
It sounds like a wonderful adventure (you should have given lil bro a gift rather than beat him up, for this opportunity). Good luck!

Talk about the simple thing's, like why they make a good pet, how long they grow to, what they eat (just touch on it), if you know about the biology then tell them a little about it, if you don't email me for some pic's and general info about snakes.

Finish off with the snake (if not to stressed at the experience) being handle by a few (say 6-8) people so they can learn that the "slimy) feel is just a myth, then let them ask questions as a finishing note.

Thats what i do when telking in schools to 13-16 year olds, nut they do have a bp and rat snake on site, so i don't have to disturb my snake's which makes it easier.

Hope tis helps and if you need any more info e-mail me on [email protected]

Hi Sherry

Let me know if you need any more info on those guys, also I could send you a pic of the mom if you want to explain genetics. The big guy should be fine getting handled but I'd be careful w/ your little anery. Good luck w/ your presentation!

I do this kind of thing often and my first rule is (no one, but my wife or I handle the animals). All you need is one of the kids to get sick (Salmonella) and you open yourself to a law suite. It doesn't matter if it was the kids lunch or your snake, the snake will be blamed. Then what if the snake gets stressed and desides to bite someone? Twenty or thirty years ago I used to let all the kids that wanted to hold the animals, but not today in this suite happy country. It's a shame!

Yeah, in this lawsuit happy world you have to be very careful . . . I wouldn't let the kids handle the snakes unless you have hand sanitizer on hand AND have them wash. Maybe a little paranoid, however it is a big deal. And you should explain about salmonella, if the kids understand why you want them to wash up they are more likely to do actually do it. That said . . . I wouldn't worry too much about 8th graders being bratty, don't let 'em bug you, at that age kids just love to be annoying. I always try to remember I was that age once . . . LOL . . . and if they are disrepectful you can always tell them to cool out or you can take your snakes and go. However, to start off you might try to relate to them on their level, explain how you got interested in snakes, why you like to keep them, etc. One thing they will probably be fascinated by is how snakes eat, you might take some pics w/you. But you might pass them around so those who are easily grossed out don't have to look. I don't know . . . some ideas. You've got some other great ideas too. I love working with kids!!! Relax and have fun!!

Oh, and 1 more thing . . . I've found this really helps when I give a presentation for a class. Have an outline or notes with the key points you want to hit, so you don't forget. I know that when I get up in front of a group things I meant to say seem to slip out of my mind. After you have an outline or notes on what you want to talk about go through it and time yourself. You don't want to discover you only have 15 minutes of material to fill a 45 minute class after you are already there. Or MORE material than you can cover in the allotted time. I know that sounds pretty basic, but it can make a huge difference once you are up in front of a class.

I've thought about hand sanitizer and decided against it. It doesn't stop a snake from deciding some kids finger smells like dinner. I can see the News Paper headlines, ravenous 8 foot cornsnake tries to devour child. Having an outline is a very god idea. I put my talking points on 3/5 cards.

LMAO! 8 ft corn snake, the dady is 3 feet and the girl is like 1 foot:p. i was thinking was walking arround the class with one snake at a time and not to let anyone hold it i have card made out. im going to do it on
genetics. colors and patterns. ages, and sizes. what makes them a good pet, how to take care of them. and then answer questions, i will probably ramble about them too
im am going to go teach it now though ill post when i get home

it went great i was really serprised. it didnt go as i suspected. i told them to blurt out a question if they had one, and there was questions most of the time. i touched up on a lot more then a exspected and a lot of the kids like them. although the papa like my hair and he got tangled up in it again so i had to have the teacher help me, she enjoyed it she was dieing to hold the little guy lol, it was really fun, and she wants me to keep bringing them back. every body enjoyed it. thanks for all the great ideas

That's the great thing about presenting animals to younger kids...they can go for DAYS just on questions alone. Some of the programs I've done where I know I'll get a ton of questions (when I was presenting our skunk, for example), I didn't do any additional research. I just went in with what I knew off the top of my head, and, as I expected, 3/4 of the time was spent answering questions! Glad to hear it went well for you!
