One thing that sets science apart from religion is that science will put an object in a bottle and try to determine if it will become an animal. They study and find faults with their reasoning and change the theories. They write it and rewrite it until everyone can understand it and come to the same conclusion. It must be demonstrable in such a way that anyone anywhere in the world can repeat your experiment and come up with the same results. Then it is considered a fact.

Religion tends to put an object in a bottle and wait for it to change into an animal. Then they say if it won’t turn into an animal it’s because you didn’t read the book correctly or you lack in faith. The fault is yours. If all else fails, “This is something we weren’t meant to understand at this time.”

Well said Wade. I think another important difference between the two is that when scientific theories are proven wrong, nobody will be more thrilled than the scientific community. To prove evolution wrong would be a scientific breakthrough, and it would represent science in action.

The Dalai Lama was once asked what would he do if specific tenets of his religion were proven wrong by science, and his response is that they should no longer be believed literally by Buddhists then. That's very much the exception to the rule IMO from religion.

I thought so too. Almost made me think I could be a Buddhist. The follow up question though, 'What if it was a very central tenet though, like reincarnation.'
His answer was something to the extent of, 'even that, but it's going to be pretty hard to disprove reincarnation.'
(I'm paraphrasing all these quotes BTW)
My problem is I can't think of a good reason to believe in reincarnation in the first place.

I just came accross this quote from the National Academy of Science- as bold as I've seen it stated and it kind of puts a stop to the whole theory or fact false dichotomy.

'Scientists most often use the word "fact" to describe an observation. But scientists can also use fact to mean something that has been tested or observed so many times that there is no longer a compelling reason to keep testing or looking for examples. The occurrence of evolution in this sense is fact. Scientists no longer question whether descent with modification occurred because the evidence is so strong.'

Wouldn't the very development (by intelligent design, of course)..... .....of the numerous corn morphs over the past 20-30 years be a micro example, a window into the macro example, of how a species can be manipulated by man or nature to change over time?

I'm just bored at work...really...not here to argue about the existence of fossil records (overflowing museums all over the world), and the story they tell.

Question : Why did God not bestow extensive internet rules and etiquette to Moses, during the wanderings of/for the two generations? Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, Safari. Not once did God mention these things to Moses and the Israelites. Why?

It's my only contribution, I think Ida is an amazing scientific find, but I refuse to argue creationism vs. evolution. Nor will I argue with Christians, I find it a futile exercise. I commend them on their strong beliefs, even if I don't share them.

Eric I am so glad you posted this Ida is extremely exciting news!! Honestly other evidence of evolution has existed for some time, but no real link between primate and human other than the knowledge genetically we are 98% alike. To me this means Darwin was right or God lost his creativity toward the end... I am an agnostic. I believe in being a good person who is honest, kind, generous, caring, and nonjudgmental. Not believing in God is no reflection of my content as a person I just see no evidence of God at all other than a bunch of books written in a lawless time where man wanted to steal land from other men, gain power, and find a way to control behavior- the Bible was real helpful to these selfish thieves! Today we have DNA and now Ida life is beautiful- thank "god" for the big astroid exploding billions of years ago!!

*lol*... I remain skeptical of both sides.. Carbon dating is known to be inaacurate with its time lines.. Seems to me I heard something like that over a decade ago, but I don't remember the resource of who's opinion it was, but it was from the Scientific Community..

As someone on this board has pointed out occasionally, I suffer from the inability to be able to write my words down to mnake sense... Sometimes I can't express what is going on in my head eithier.. But I do understand there some a fair amount of bunk that gets spread..

However, I do understand that people do put a lot of faith of what seems to be the general concensous, without hesitation or question.. Personally think there are a lot of excuses and cop outs on both sides..

If we evolved from monkeys, why don't we still throw piles of dung around and walk around on all fours while screaming? Anyone who believes in evolution has something seriously wrong with them. Read the book of Genesis. That's how the earth was made. Science made it all up as a cover up.
