Sculpey Clay Hides

OK, so I couldn't resist it. :D There were all those pretty colors of Sculpey clay at Hobby Lobby, so I had to bring some home. What better thing to make with Sculpey than little hatchling hides/water bowels. (Sculpey is a nontoxic polymer clay that oven bakes to hardness.)

As long as I was being a corn dork, I figured I may as well go all the way and show how much of a dork I am. :nyah:

Here are some hides I made tonight for grins:

Those are really cool Connie!! The next time I go to the craft store I'll have to check that stuff out since my guys are outgrowing their coco huts. Ingenuity at it's finest!

YOu just save me a fortune in new hides :nyah: .

Great idea, especially for the little ones :spinner: .

Those are GREAT!!! I am inspired...next time I'm at the craft store I'll probbly be coming home with some more of that Sculpy. Btw, I love your tropical paradise hide, its sooo cute. :)

They haven't been, yet. I let them sit for several days with water in them and saw no leakage. They're listed as non-toxic, so you shouldn't have to... although it would stiffen them up a little. As it is, they do have some play in them right now.

WOOOOOW, I haven't seen Sculpy here in Sweden but I'll deffinately keep an eye out for it. They look awesome! Is it anything like Fimo?

Princess, Fimo and Sculpey are about the same thing, just different brands.

Hurley, I know it says non-toxic and it will hold water just fine, but it still has a faint noxious odor to it even after cooking. I've used it for jewelry. I might make hides, but I don't know that I'd put water in it for consumption. I personally wouldn't drink from a cup made of Sculpey or Fimo simply because its not made for that purpose. But from I drink from plastic cups, so maybe its no different. LOL

Agreed, right after cooking it does as the polymerization completes. I wash them thoroughly once cool and have set them out to cure for a couple weeks. As they sit right now, they have no detectable odor or taste (yes, I tasted it...better me get sick than my snakes. ;) ) In fact, the plastic cups I have have more odor than these do after curing.

At the very least they make groovy hides. :D

Excellent idea, Hurley....You have inspired me to go get some sculpey and make some hides for my little ones...I was just thinking that I need to get out and buy some more...now I will just make them...Cool!!!!

Didn't taste like anything.

...then my tongue started tingling and my teeth turned purple and fell out and my head exploded.

:D

j/k But it makes a nice story!

Sorry to hear about your head, there, Hurley. LOL

I am going to make some myself, but for sure keep them on the cool side of the viv. Because it can easily be overcooked, I wouldn't want it near any heat source. If it overcooks the fumes are worse than skunk. I've learned the hard way with the stuff.

LOL, I'll take your word for it...I haven't overcooked any...yet.

And yes, I agree, I'd never put them over heat. They're still sitting looking pretty on my counter right now.

Hurley, did you see the faux stone looking Sculpey at your store? I love the sparkly stuff, too. I suppose the snakes don't care one way or the other, but you could make a whole series of designer hides.

The marbled/stone stuff is very cool. The blue and green I got were the sparkley variety. You can also make neat tye-die patterns by rolling a couple balls of different colors together and kneading a couple times. Don't overdo..you don't want them to blend too much, but it comes out neat as well. I need to get to Hobby Lobby...awwwwww, but they are never open on Sundays.
