Setting up a Viv, a few questions

Well, I've finally decided to get me a baby corn, this will not be my first. I had one before I joined the military and had to give it to a friend of mine when I went into basic. :(

Now I'm out and I'm working on setting up another viv (have no idea where any of my old stuff is). I'll be using carefresh recycled pet bedding for substrate, which is what I used for my last baby and was very happy with it. :) Great stuff, very absorbant and easy to clean. Working on a 10g right now, UTH on one end, 2 thermometers (one on each side of the tank) with a 85ish heat during the day on the hot side and 75ish on the cool. Will be picking up hides and other bits this weekend (all before I get the baby of course).

Now, the question I have is this: I was going to set up a 20 long to start with, but a friend of mine with alot of herp experience has told me that starting the baby in such a large tank would lead to alot of stress. I've never heard this before! Is it true?

You can use a 20 gallon to start with, but if you do, you have to make sure that there are tons of hides all over for the baby to feel secure. Do that and you're good to go.

Not true. This is one of those perpetual myths that just won't go away. As long as you have enough hides, your snake will be fine. How many is enough? The way I judge is that the snake shouldn't have to go more than 2/3 of its body length in any direction before it finds another bit of cover. Follow this guideline and you'll do fine.

Just a note about the thermometers. Go to a place like Wal-mart and get one of the indoor/outdoor digital thermometers with a probe. You can get one that also measures humidity. Place the probe on the glass over your UTH. This will give you a much more accurate measurement of your temperature.

I agree. I went out and bought the Acu-Rite indoor/outdoor combo. from Wal-mart for $8.88 (the one with a hygrometer is more like $11/$12). It's a great way to monitor your temperatures.
