Hey again people :wavey: How old do rat pups need to be to be sexed and how do you do it? they are 4days old i looked but i can't really tell the diffrent form a belly button kinda bit.To the other bits :grin01: I can sex the parents lol because he has a bit set of you know whats. Any hints wil be apreciated.

When they are about a week old, you can usually see the girls' nipples. They have 12 of them. 6 on each side. After about a week and a half you can usually tell by the "bits" because the males have more of a space between thier anus and their pee tube. The girls' anus and pee tube is much closer together. If you want you can go to mouse and rat breeder websites and they usually have pics of the difference. Just search for "rat breeders" and you will come up with lots of sites.

Google is thy friend...

To sum up:

The urethra (the tube) is present on both males and females. The distance between it and the anus is key. In males, it is farther away, as there will be room for when the testicles descend into the scrotum. And in females, it will remain virtually unchanged.

When holding rat pinks on their back, you can also help see by taking the base of their tails and pushing it upwards (towards belly) gently, in males the area appears more 'baggy' than that of females.

Well you can try to look and see if you can tell the difference now, its just that I've found it easier to wait until they are a week old.

Thanks you two that site is a gd help. I must soread some points around before giving back to bobo's mama. i will see if i can sex them in the morning i have some photos of the babys i will post tomorrow aswell.

I know this is all a part of it...but it still breaks my heart.

Rest in peace little ones, I hope you don't suffer long...

i know they are so cute i have decided that four will live four a few weeks for the boa and i will keep one female to give back to the dad.

They arent food to me, they are pets.
I would feel the same about feeding kittens to a boa.
Not a popular view around here I know.
I hope they dont suffer, their suffering hurts my heart.

I don't want them to suffer either,There
squeeks are so cute when i held them but it has to be done i can't get frozen food in spain and its costing far to much buying breeders.

I can make a gas chamber i read some where that it takes alot longer for it to work on pups? is why i thought freezing them will kill them alot quicker because of the sudden change in temps.

Freezing kills pinks and fuzzies alot faster, from a minute to 2 minutes...but in the time it takes them to die they suffer alot.
Gas takes alot longer to kill them, but there is virtually no suffering, from what I have read about it.

On a side note, did you know that rats that are handled from birth make the best pets and are more intune with people than rats that arent?

ok I will make a chamber for them I will keep the one youngen to breed and raise as a pet aswell the other female is getting on better with me.Not alot but better the male wants to come over to me some times and isn't to fussed if he is being held.

Females in general are more hyper and active than males are. My 2 females don't like to be held, but do show that they love me in other ways. Neither of my girls were socialized as babies though. One was intended snake food that was left in with a snake for a weekend with no food or water. The snake wasnt interested so she was left in a freezing car for a few hours (one of her ears was frostbitten, part of it later fell off), then given to someone whose girlriend wouldnt let him keep her. He brought her to me, having heard I keep them as pets. She is VERY skittish and fearful, but gives me kisses and runs right to me whenever she gets startled.
My other girl is a spayed female I adopted from a "rodent rescue" to keep the other girl company.

The males I have had were better "lap pets" but the active and playful females tend to make you laugh more.

You know, I'm really not trying to be disrepsectful here, but if you don't agree with breeding rodents for snake food, why would you come on here (the feeder section of a snake site) and express your view points in such a manner as to try to seemingly convert people from doing just that?

Some people breed cornsnakes for kingsnake or monitor food, I don't agree with it, but I also don't frequent those sites that seem to encourage it. I feed my sickly cornsnake hatchlings to my own kingsnakes. It's the responsible and non-wasteful thing to do.

If people want to breed their cat or dog for boa/python food, I wouldn't necessarily agree with that either because I have both for pets. But then again I don't agree with all of the unfixed 'pets' being dumped because they're not wanted anymore, to die a miserable death in the woods at the hands of a pack of hungry coyotes.

It's all relative for me, I guess. So long as they lead a good and well-cared for life in captivity and die as humanely as possible, I really don't care what happens to them after they die. I raise my own chickens for my own meals. They lead a life a hell of a lot better than the chicken meat you buy in the store ever thought about. Those chickens never saw grass, bugs, dust baths, sunlight, etc. Mine die with dignity and make a great chicken and noodles with dignity.

People eat dogs, cats, AND rats in Southeast Asia, people eat horses in Europe, people eat snakes in the US, people eat spiders in South America, and some people eat people. "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat" kind of thing.

But I don't go to sites and try to convert people to my way of thinking, necessarily. Yes, rats can make great pets, or so I am told. But I personally don't trust any rat any farther than I could throw one, hypothetically speaking. And I certainly don't discuss how great of a pet they are in a feeder section of a snake forum. No matter how many "aren't they cute?" picture posts I may do, I never lose sight of the fact that they are ultimately, snake food.

To go back on topic, I've euthanized mouse and rat pinks in a carbon dioxide chamber (when I had dry ice), and due to their resistance to smothering it took a heck of a lot longer and a lot more gasping than even I was comfortable with. Fastest way I've seen is a thump to the head and in the freezer they go, and its over in a minute or two.

So I hope I didn't come across as a complete ass, as that was not my intention at all. It just doesn't make any sense to me to hang out on a forum section that would obviously cause grief to a person with beliefs such as yours, and try to 'spread the word' on how great of a pet rats can be.

I just don't get it. :shrugs:

If you feel this way, how can you justify keeping and feeding 17(!) snakes?

I feed frozen thawed mice and have rats as pets.......
and rats and cornsnakes are my favorite animals of all I have had......and I have had alot.....
I dont frequent this site to discourage breeding for snakefood as I keep and love corns...
but I love rats too....mice not as much
and I want suffering minimized....is that wrong?
Since corns eat mice I dont understand why intelligent wonderful rats are seen as food...but thats just me....Taceas I hang out here because I have corns...and love them...so why wouldnt I????? What has to happen will happen...and my feelings wont change it....I want less suffering...is that so wrong?

Heres the babys.

I must be weird or something. I don't see food there! I think they are CUTE!

And Aiden since you ARE keeping the parents as pets....and I keep rats as pets....tell me, what is wrong with me telling you things about rats that might help you understand yours a bit better? Like, did you know that if a rat pees on you, its a compliment? He (or she) telling the other rats that you "belong" to him!
