Sexing

Hello, Im kind of a "lurker" here on the forum. I read through threads finding the information I want and looking at all the wonderful photos. I know there are lots of threads on sexing out there, but I have a concern. Im afraid that I will hurt my snake. I have watched Kathy Love's videos on sexing many times. I believe she also says that the first time you try popping it should be on a male. Well I dont know what mine is. I would like to think that its a female cause shes awful cute! And cause "her" name is Aphrodite. lol. Any helpful tips to prevent harm and get an answer would be wonderful.

I will post a couple photos in the photo section so you can see how cute she is.

If you can come to the expo in Chicago in Oct, I will sex it for you and show you how to do it in the future. There is nothing quite as good as a live demo.

Is this the snake you posted pics of? I think it would be very difficult to pop an 05', it could be probed, definately not something you should do on your own for the first time. Pretty snake though. susan

Thank you all. I will have to get "Her" probed. Yes this is the snake I posted photos of. I think she is the cutest, but then again every parent says that about thier own kid. right?

actualy males have longer thiker tails than females who have short thinner tails

Kathy Love has a book on cornsnakes that u can find on her web site cornutopia.com and ull learn so much from it just like I did.

Females don't have that much shorter of tails, but the are easy to tell apart because the females tail will taper evenly from the vent to the tip. The males tail will stay thick from the vent to about 1/3 the way down and then taper a little quicker out to the end.

Size and shape are all relative. If you haven't seen A LOT of males and females of a particular size, then a description doesn't really help a lot.

We have photos of adult tails in our books (which the publisher put in UPSIDE DOWN in at least one edition, making the label wrong!), but you really need to experience seeing lots of them for it to mean much. I still pop or probe everything - I don't go by just looks, even though I have seen LOTS of them. There were a few times that I was surprised when I thought it looked like a male or female, but probed opposite.

I had actually looked in Kathys book at one time and thought I could tell by the looks. I guess I just wanted to know for sure. I dont really plan on breeding her, although I would love to see how beautiful her babies would be. I dont feel that is an appropriate or adiquate reason to breed her. Thank you all agian. I love how open, and understanding everyone is on this forum.

My book...Kathy Love can you tell us for sure?

A book I bought when I got mine said the same thing. Just the other day I was on a website that said the opposite...Now I am confused.

The confusion is in the description. The males do have longer, skinnier tails, BUT there is a bulge right after the vent where the hemipenes are stored, so they are "fatter" in that area. But as I said, "thicker or skinnier" is all relative, and I do not go by looks alone. I probe or (on babies) pop.

Thanks

Thanks, for clearing that up Kathy. I know we haven't been formally introduced, but I know from this site that you are a true expert and have written books...your are just so well known on this site.
