shedding questions

I have a young amel corn about 3 months old ive had him just over a month now and he has shed once about 2 weeks after getting him, he has now gone into his hide and not been out and about for 3 days now i think he maybe coming up for another shed , can anyone tell me how offten a snake of his age sheds and should i just leave him be or should i check him out im a bit worried also he feed day is tomorrow should i feed him if he is about to shed or will it be better to leave it untill he has shed ?

They will shed about once a month. Some will eat even though they are preshed. You can offer them the food.

Give his cage a good misting each day to raise the humidity to help his shed a bit and don't worry.

They are good at doing what comes natural to them (shedding,pooping,eating), but tend to get reclusive when going through the changes.

Sorry to jump in on ya thread Tanya but i had a question on shedding too and did not want to make a second post.

I have had my corn for 2 weeks now and he has still not shed and i am wondering if what i have in my cage is enough for him to get it off with.I have 2 caves,a ceramic water bowl and a toilet roll is that ok or do i need a big chunk of wood in there :shrugs:

What you have sssnake is fine. it doesnt take much for them to get their skin release started. Just make sure humidity is good during the preshed phase and they should do fine with no help.

yeah, you can hold him, but it will just be stressful for him if he is preshed probably. best to just let him relax and hide.

thanks for your help i know most of my questions can be answered by faq's but it so much nicer to chat to someone about it all. as a guide do you know the sort of weight a 3 month corn should be?

I dont mind answering these types of questions. After all , your just trying to learn about your snake. That is better than shooting blind! As for size it TOTALLY varies. there is no regular size for the animals. It depends, on type, lineage, birth weight, eating patterns, etc....

As long as he is round in the body with no wrinkles and he is growing, then he is probably good!

well i put him on my kitchen scales and he diddnt even move the needle !!!! but he looks in great shape i have just put some pics in the gallery

on a kitchen scale he wouldnt show much . He probably only weighs about 30 grams or so. He looks healthy and round though!

thats my boy/girl i don't know i just have a feeling hes a boy! what age do they have to be before you can find out the sex?

The younger the better to have someone "pop" your baby. There is a great video showing what this process is on Kathy Love's site.

I just wanted to add that something you can do instead of misting the tank when you think they are close to shedding is to make a moist hide. When baby corns are small you can use an old margarine container or an even smaller tupperware. Cut a hole in it about 1 - 1 1/2" around somewhere in the lid or near the top. Then take clean sphagnum moss <rehydrate it by soaking and then wringing it out in your hand until you can't squeeze any more water out> and fill this container about 1/2 to 3/4 full. Keep this container moist and change the moss every few weeks and I highly doubt you will have any incomplete sheds again!

Hi, my snake snake is going to shed soon, her eyes have turned cloudy today. My tank is always at a high humidity 60-70%, i know that that is a little high, but should that be good for my snake to shed? thanks
