Shedding

This morning I woke up and my snake was on his second shed since I've had him. The first time it all came off in 1 large piece, but this time almost everything is off besides 3 or 4 pieces on his body..... I put a damp towel in a separate container and he slithered through it but still not all the skin is coming off... I've read thats its dangerous if the skin doesnt all come off so I was wondering if this is normal and if I should just wait or if I have to do anything specific.... thanks.

Repeat what you did with the wet towel, and just let him stay closed in the container with the towel longer. Maybe an hour or so. You were right on target with this. Good job.

You'll just need to bump up the humidity next time so that he sheds better. Make sure you take a good look at the tail tip to make sure all the pieces are off.

The humidity in the tank is generally 60-70% during his sheds because I keep damp papertowels on the cool gradient of the cage during the time of shedding. All the pieces are off of him besides like 3 very small pieces that are still stuck to his sides. I know over time they will come off, but my concern was do I need to get it off right away or can I let it stay on his body for a few days without causing any harm?

thanks

They won't do any harm. The problem areas are the tail tips and maybe the head. Pieces on the body will work off on their own without a problem. It's just where it can cut off circulation that it's a concern.

Just thought you might want to consider making a humid hide rather than trying to mess with viv humidity and leaving moist towels in there. For smaller snakes you can use a margarine tub or the like and lager ones you can use an ice cream pail.

All you do is cut an entry/exit hole and put some moist sphagnum moss in it. Corns seem to know when they need the humidity. Since I started using this type of hide in my vivs I've not had any crummy sheds! :)

thanks for the good idea rebecca. next time when his eyes turn blue ill have to try that and see how it works.

No problem :) Just to let you know though, I always have humid hides in there, not just when in blue :)

Talk to you later,
Rebecca
