The shipping rates for online mice are rather pricey..

....

Yeah. I'd only get one corn snake so i don't think i'd need A TON of mice. :D For now, i'll just buy at petco or petsmart. Still squirm'ish but we all get over it eventually, i think.

For fake vine-like decorations you might also want to check out the crafts section at wal mart. You can get more for cheaper than a reptile-cage-specific pet store plant.

Also if you will be putting it in a 20 long right away, make sure ther are tons of hiding spaces. All my snakes like fake vines as ground cover. And throw in some empty toilet paper tubes, lots of snakes like to curl up in those.

The fake vine is only $2.99 at petsmart. I don't think that's pricey at all. :D

What do you think of this?

It's for $11.49.

It should be pointed out that handling a mouse through a plastic bag is not going to prevent the smell from transfering to your hands. Put an onion in one or garlic and you can smell it. Plus a dog can smell through plastic. Even smell what is inside a sealed metal can. And a snakes sense of smell is like 50 times greater than that of a dog. Just throwing that out there.

Frozen mice smell like shrimp to me. I told that to the guy at Gourmet Rodent, and he says "Don't tell me that!!! Now I won't be able to eat shrimp!!" But to me, they just smell good. More like brine shrimp than people shrimp. The Mouse Factory mice don't really smell like anything.

That will be enough aspen to last a LONG time. Years. I use about three of those a year, with 60 snakes.

How many times are you repose to change aspen bedding?....I have reptile carpet for my corn.

I love repti-carpet but I heard they don't work well for a snake. Whole not being absorbent as effectively as it should plus it doesn't hold back the stench of snake poo. List goes on. They say to do a daily spot-clean with aspen to remove any poop if you see any and change the entire thing once a week?

I hope i don't sound like a bad guy by saying this but the shipping rates seem to be rather.. pricey no matter how little amount i would buy. According to the petsmart website, I can get a 50 pack of pinkie mice for about $39.99 each pack of fifty. And seeing as petsmart isn't too far away, i could just do a local pickup and save the shipping charges.

Fuzzy is only $49.99 per 50 pack. Doesn't seem so steep considering you would only feed one mice per 5-6 days. Anyone have any bad experiences with petsmart frozen mice? :D

The 39.99 is befor shipping. Shipping is 29.99.
If you buy them at the store, I don't think they have the big packs.

Yet, Petco works too.

Now for the big question! Don't kill me! But i was thinking of rescuing a snake from petsmart. :D

But i was thinking of rescuing a snake from petsmart

I can see your point, but unfortunately, that wouldn't be a rescue.

What you'd be doing is proving to them - if they're one of the bad ones - that they can keep snakes in poor conditions and people will buy them regardless. You'll be reinforcing the idea that they don't have to take proper care of their reptiles because they can make a profit without.

Your best bet is to find a local breeder so that you can see what conditions they're being kept in. Or if you have a trustworthy local "mom and pop" store and they take good care of their animals, you might want to consider supporting them. If you can afford the shipping cost, you can buy from a breeder elsewhere and take your pick of some really nice morphs.

....

The local petsmart that I go to seems to be one of the good ones. I took some time in checking the cages of each individual pet just to see what the living arrangements was like and it was always very clean and properly maintained, at least from what i saw.

I saw the peta report on Rainbow World Exotics as well as a bunch of other detailed reports. If i was not sure that the snake was being taken care of at the store, i wouldn't even think about getting one from there.

I am a very dedicated pet owner. My two rabbits are spoiled rotten and given allot of love. It would not change if i added the corn snake to my family.

If you're happy with your local Petsmart, then you shouldn't be viewing a purchase there as a rescue in the first place. Be aware they may not have a wide range of morphs though and if they can't provide a feeding record, I'd take that as an indicator to look elsewhere (no feeding record = no guarantee that you're buying an established eater).

You need to do some research on PETA. They have an agenda with regard to reptiles i.e. that they shouldn't be kept as pets at all. I wouldn't automatically rule out a supplier just because PETA says they're bad. (Personally, I might take it as something of a character reference, but perhaps that's just me being cynical!). If you can visit and see poor conditions for yourself, then that's another matter.

I didn't mean rescue in the literal sense. Just that I would bring it home and away from any passing visitors. I'm not selective on a specific type of corn snake i want so not having a full range of morphs makes no difference to me.

I also contacted a local breeder who can sell me a male hatchling for a decent price so i have two options available now.

I thought of you tonight when I held a thawed rat pink to my cheek to judge the temperature!

Thanks For Clearing That For Me
