Hey all, Hydras been doing great up until the last week or so. He's started spending a lot of his time in his waterbowl which he has never done before, even in shed. His last shed was the sixth of December and he doesn't appear to be going into shed again. The only thing I have noticed is some of his belly scales seem to be slightly discoloured so I've tried to take some pictures of them (sorry they're all blurry but i hope you see what I mean, they're showing up yellow/orange when they should be black).

So can anyone advise what to do? Could he of burned his belly? He does like to burrow. I've also made him a humid hide out of an old take away container with kitchen role, should I keep this in and should I go buy sphagnum moss and an actual hide? Sorry for all the questions but I'm concerned about him. He's still very active and seems to be hunting - I'm due to feed him tonight. Thanks in advance.

That is a normal coloration for belly scales. They can be multi-colored. What is the overall temperature of his viv- just the general air temp?
 
Okay, glad to hear it's normal. Just never noticed it before. Air temp is about 22oC, so slightly warmer than my room temp. And the soaking is normal? Thank you!

Well- soaking can indicate either he's warmer than he likes, or something is bothering him, like mites, or he's just in the mood to soak. I don't see my guys get in their water bowls to cool off unless the ambient air temp is nearing 90, though, and even then, not all of them get in at that temp. (I live in Florida, and on super hot days, my AC can't keep up with the outside temp, always.)
 
Okay, I'm going to give his tank a complete check over and then check him over to make sure it's not mites. I live in Scotland so getting the ambient air temp any higher than the early twenties is difficult! Thank you so much

sometimes a snake just likes to take a bath. No big deal unless they get in there and stay.

If your humidity is low the snake's skin can dry out so soaking may be an option. If he has mites, soaking is a way to rid himself of the critters. If he's too hot, soaking is a way to cool down. And sometimes they will soak before or during a shed.

If he's otherwise eating and pooping and acting normal, I would not worry about it.
