snake hook

3 ft long snake hooks are ok. It should do the job, if your only using it in the house for pushing away an aggressive snake. I have an old 3 wood club that I cut the head off of and welded a metal hook on. I use it feild herping...

One of those came with my big BP. Z uses it, because he's scared spitless of even the tiniest snake, and he likes to keep the big, hungry ones at arm's length, but I never have. Cornsnake bites don't worry me, and my BP is so mellow, I'm surprised he bites his dinner :). I'm not sure it could handle the weight of the big guy, anyway (I can't remember his weight for sure, but I think it's something in the area of 3-4 thousand grams). I think that as long as you aren't trying to hold anything very heavy, it should work fine.

i always handle my snakes by hand but i sometimes have intances where i would want a hook around, like once my ball p was sick and he was acting jumpy.. and right now my corn is acting agressive b/c i didnt handle him for possibly months. its just nice to have a hook. and the one on ebay is a great deal. im sure if i were to even FIND one in my city it would proabbly be extremely overpriced.

I have that exact one for the occasional use. Seems to work ok even with my Hogg when she is in feeding mode. But I just use it to settle her or my BP as they can be in a bit of a frenzy when feeding and can tend to snap at anything warm and moving. After the hook touches them though they settle right down and can be handled by hand.

I would agree with smallet...

I have the same one as well. They are great for anything up to an adult size colubrid, but too small to safely lift an adult ball. Using it to settle or gently deflect the head of a ball should be fine...

PS-Here in the states, most large chain pet stores with a decent herp department carry these for $8 or $9. It might be worth a few local calls before you shell out $11.50 plus shipping...

yes but thats the thing.. the states has everything you need. I live in a city in canada that practically doesn't carry anything, and when they do its considered a speciality item and is super expensive. I buy a ton of things online because of this. And not to mention the fact that Canada's money is worth as much as the us right now, but they havent changed any of the prices to reflect that. So basically things here cost double as much as If I bought something from the states. Even the big chain pet stores here are tiny and don't carry the same things that are sold in the same chain in the US.

I figured that may be the case but wasn't sure.

I've spent considerable time in the Toronto and Vancouver areas and they both had good pet stores. I guess not so much with Ottowa...

Oh, I should add I got mine from a breeder here in Alberta that retails all kinds of supplies from her website. And I paid $10 including gst. I missed you being in Canada. PM if you want the website address, so I don't break TOS. She can probably mail it to you for the same price as that one with her price. So you would at least save the shipping. And she carries a range of different ones if you wish something heavier. I hardly ever buy anything from stores now. Getting to know where to get things in Canada can save a bundle on herping equipment. BTW I am in no way connected to to that business either.

I've already bought the one on ebay, but thanks!

I doubt the shipping would be cheaper though, it costs more to ship Canada within Canada then US to Canada or vice versa, because the US post is subsidized.

i paid 2.50 shipping

I'm pretty sure I've seen snake hooks in the petsmarts around here, but I'm not entirely sure how long ago that was, or if they were big enough to suit a ball python.

If not, you can always try the hike to Big Rays reptile, it's.... um, somewhere near Orleans I think, you'd have to google maps it. I'm sure they'd have something like that,
