Snake identification

Hi All,
I was hoping an expert out there might help identify the snake in the attached picture. I know it might be difficult given that there's no pic of the belly, but I thought it was worth a shot. A friend of mine found it on his property in the SF bay area of CA (south bay if it matters).
Thanks,
Dan

Yea, looks like a sharptail to me. Did it poke you with it's tail, like a bee stinger?

Ok, this was my guess too but I didn't want to lead anyone. I've never seen one of these. Pretty cool.
Thanks very much!
