snake scared to death outside...

I fequently take our snake outside on nice warm days and handle him in the fresh air without putting him down. Yesterday, I decided to put him down in the yard and let him roam while closely supervised. He immediately coiled and prepared to strike. I couldn't even pick him up for fear of being bitten. My husband came and draped a towel over him, which he promptly struck at. Then we were able to put him safely back into his viv. He was left alone for a few hours to calm down and has been back to his sweet self since then. Anyone have any idea why he did this? Have you had a snake do this? I though I was giving him a treat, but he seems to prefer his captive lifestyle. :shrugs:
 
Have you ever known someone who was closterphobic, chloster......afraid of open spaces? Ever watch them freak out because they were in a large airport or public venue? That is exactly what is going on with your snake. Instinctually, they like small cramped and secure areas. You took them out of their ideal surroundings and put them in a foreign and frightening environment. :)

So does anyone have a snake that likes to get down and explore? I have seen pictures of snakes outside on here and they aren't posed to strike! He loves to roam on the floor inside our house....

I thought that was a fear of fancy wool or maybe it is things grown on a farm. :rolleyes:

All my snake are insiders only. I think you'll find that with age comes the willingness to tolerate change. (In corns I mean. ;))
 
Iv brought my snakes outside and no they never did what yours did, they seemed to want to take off on me. The way I do this is I have a 33 gallon outside for them on nice warm days. They have found a way to get out of it and when they hit the ground its all about checking out the new enviroment. Only one of my snake dont like the outside world, its because hes very old and wants his last days in his home, I guess anyway.

Back on topic, I took my snake outside once, and I was the one who got freaked out! I was so afraid I'd lose him, so I brought him back inside. I'll never try that one again...However, I have never heard of snakes getting all uptight about it. Perhaps there was something specific that scared him, like an odd shadow or something moving around that he couldn't quite see. He didn't have something familiar anymore to reassure him.
 
Mine never did that, he just sort've froze... c_c
So I stood there staring at him, and he layed there staring at nothing.
Oh it was great fun.

It's obviously the fact that we are of a more mature age, and can get that kind of thing!
