Generally it seems my snakes like to poop when they're a) in a new environment and b) left to their own devices for a bit. So they don't usually poop on my when I'm holding them, but will almost always poop if I let them slither around somewhere for half an hour or so.
Personally I speculate if they might be "marking a territory", after some fashion. I don't think it's because they are threatened because they don't do it when I'm holding them. Er, I mean, they do poop when threatened (like when I'm trying to sex babies, fun fun) but I don't think carpet-poop is from being threatened.
It's also possible it's just because they are being active and exploring and that makes them need to go after a while
