What's the point?

First, spotted pythons are a pain in the butt to get feeding compared to corns.

Second, and more relevant to this thread, different snakes can gain at different rates, even on the same intake of food. Two of the corns so far seem to be better able to utilize the mice, even though all the mice are FT from the same supplier. One even LOST weight between feedings. Given that the percentage of food weight being converted to snake weight is very high it's quite likely that I'm weighing them before they poop everything out. (Which is fine since I'm not using this to look for exact weights, only patterns, but could be confusing if you start looking too hard at the exact weights)

I don't have complete records from when I first got my king snake but it took about a month and 5 feedings (pinks) to go from 23-25g. Similarly, my older spotted python Eugene stayed at 18g for 3 feedings straight.

I wouldn't stress over it unless you are seeing consistent weight LOSS or no weight gain even over a considerable stretch of time. I also would not increase feeding amount or reduce feeding interval too hastily.

An important note: I have had 1 regurge with these snakes (for the sister of the anery motley listed above) and it was after the night I decided to be lazy and feed everyone (larger and hatchling snakes) on the same night, even though it was a night early for the hatchlings (4 day interval). While there were other factors at play (I fed slightly larger pinks that night because that happened to be what I pulled out of the bag, snake in question was going into blue) I won't be feeding on that close of an interval again.

I didn't include the snake that regurged in the list because I haven't fed or weighed her since the 14th because of the regurge so she's off schedule compared to the others.

I keep track of it all rather obsessively because I'm a science geek and like looking at long term patterns in stuff like this. I don't obsess about how much the snakes gain or lose unless it's going outside of what I consider to be normal (which is judged using my eye and common sense).

You know, OP, your snake may not be gaining because its metabolism is kept higher than ideal by the stress you're inflicting upon it. I'm with Nanci: you need to slow down your feedings for the snake's sake. You stated that you want to follow the Munson plan; so follow it.

Ok... i'm willing to try anything. I'll stick with every 5-6 days than, maybe every 4 days is too often, i dunno anymore. I'm willing to try anything. Sounds good! Thanks for the tips, and for the charts.

Those temps are acceptable for a baby, as long as they have access to a cooler spot if they want it. I think someone else said it, but you may want to weigh only every couple of weeks, or even less. As long as your snake seems healthy and has good body tone, all is probably well. Just be patient - all babies grow at their own rate, whatever the species. As long as what they need is provided, they'll grow.

I have a gradient viv setup. highest the warm side gets it 87 and the lowest the cool side gets is 70. So my range from lowest to highest ever is 70-87.

Mine are in a rack with a gradient of ~88 - 72. The corns spend a lot of time at the middle of the temp range, going to the warmer end when digesting and getting ready to shed. The pythons spend almost all their time in the warmest part (the way I have my rack set up they have a slightly larger warm area and slightly higher temps because they seem to prefer it just slightly warmer than corns).

If your scale measures in 0.1g increments why are you giving us only rounded values? If it's always telling you 10.0 exactly and never 10.3 or 9.7 then I think it may have more decimal places displayed than it is actually capable of measuring. In which case it's quite likely your snake has gained more than the scale is telling you.

What is the max weight your scale can take? If it's more than 1kg or so then the scale is probably only capable of 1-2g increments, regardless of the number of places it displays. I bought a scale specifically for weighing hatchlings and food items for that reason (old one is 55lb max, 2g increments, new one is 500g max, 0.1g increments). You can get a new scale for less than $20 including shipping if the one you have is not precise enough for your liking.

Well i just got done weighing again after 53 hours since her last feeding which was 2 f/t pinkies. She's 12g, and i stand corrected i thought my scale did the .1 increments but it doesn't so i'm a lil mad about that. i will be getting a new scale soon. Another thing i noticed was that she pooped on the lip of the top lid. So now i'll have to look there as well. I don't know if she gained another 2g or not, because some of that weight might be food, so i'll wait till the next feeding day to get a true reading. My scale might be wrong because when she's stretched out it says 10g and when she's in a ball on the scale it says 12g now. Before i wasn't getting mixed readings, and now i am, so i dunno what to say other than if she looks healthy than i'm not worrying too much about it.

Hey Jimmy...from one newb to another...relax. If your snake is eating and pooping, it's all good.

Believe I am no expert on corn snake babies, I've raised some. Without exception mine only get handled between feedings long enough to check them over change thier water and put them back. I weigh them maybe once a month, don't worry about the .1 increments in weight or whether or not they weigh less after eating and before poos or after. I have had two regurges in 5 years. I don't start really handling them until they are about one year. I guess I have better things to do then put all that energy into one snake, although I realize with only one snake it probably doesn't take that long:sidestep:

Susang, you have wonderful words of wisdom. I hope when if/when I have that many snakes, I'll calm down a bit, too. How long have you beed doing this? I wish I'd started in my teens aside from the odd black snakes from our woodpile. We were clueless. We'd keep them for week, just long enough to scare the crap out of the milk man, then let them go.

Nope...having one snake takes up most of my free time. If i'm not at work or busy or on the computer i'm usually doing something snake related. I feed her let her rest and digest for 48 hours and then handle her for 15 minutes, and weigh her if i feel the need or if i'm just wondering if it's changed. And then i put her back and i'll sit there and read a book or study and watch her like i'm watching tv. She's fairly active after 7pm one and off and then constantly active after midnight till well when i wake up i still see her moving around between 7am-9am.

Jimmy I spend way to much time reading yor posts, but curious is your snake a male or female, or is it your sisters snake or what?????

I've been wondering the same thing Susan, he calls his snake her/she/female, but it's listed in his sig and on his iherp page as male :shrugs: Could be a newbie error though ;)

Well I don't know.
A bedtime story:
When I was but a wee child I was told playing with snakes could cause emotional damage, brain damage (forgetfullness) or cause hair to grow on parts of our body where we don't want hair???? Oh! maybe that was playing with snakes too much:awcrap: I can't remember!
