Snakemas! (cages & heating)

I'm working on building more efficient cages for all my corns. Got two cages up to snuff, I think :D So for a snakey xmas present, I'm letting two of the guys test out the new digs!

What do you think?

Unfortunately not quite as pretty to look at as I'd hoped... I'm still making things up as I go along. And I made some... unfortunate choices in my haste, such as using wood-glue to help secure the bottom acrylic there D: UGLY! And I accidentally placed some of the wood marking-side-out on the middle cage frame. UHG! Still, they work, and I don't think they look bad, do they?

The top cage is almost done, but I'm waiting for an order of aluminum plates I put in before I put a snake in it. Right now all it's got is tinfoil and metal tape covering the heater :/

So here's my heating method, I quite like it! Requires a powerdrill and a circular saw, or something similar.

It's a aluminum square sealed with silicon. Underneath the square is enough space to slide a heat pad :D I was able to find a 1'x1' aluminum plate at home depot in a section with building materials, but it's much cheaper to order online if you're getting a bunch, of course. I'm going to try to build about 20 of these things so it's worth it to me! But I bought one to test it out first.

Here is the back. There's a bunch of cardboard stuffed in there to act as a spacer for the plate while the sealant set.

I'm putting a thermostat probe on a heat pad in the back, set to 90F. That's the thermostat you see resting on top of the cages in the first photo. Everything seems to be working pretty well :D

Want to add, I'm using 11" flexwatt (connected to the thermostat) for heating. Originally I was going to build the heaters into the tank (as you see on the top one) but this really isn't a great idea. If anything goes wrong with the heater it'll be a big pain to change! I really like being able to slide the heater in and out, and using the sealed aluminum to conduct heat while protecting the pad and snake from each other.

I don't think they look ugly at all, its a cool set up! My snakes were bummed when they didn't get anything for Christmas... :grin01:

No they don't look bad at all, and the aluminium plate is a really clever idea, I am jealous of your talent! I'd love to do something like that. I'm sure your snakeys will appreciate their Christmas present :)
