Snakes and rats in same room??

Emanon

This and That
I have a question to the esteemed members of the board:
Is it doable to house both predator and prey in the same room? I have a snake rack and would like to raise my own rodents so as to reduce the amount of $$ going out. I only have one room to work with so I ask you, is it ok to house my snakes and rodents in the same room?
Thanks!

Well, I'm not exactly an "elder" in this area, but for what it's worth, my son's corn is in the same room as his pet mice (2 of them). I notice she's a bit more ravenous when she feeds, but she's also on a diet of sorts because she tends to get too big too fast. So, I can't tell you exactly which lead to which (ravenous because of prey smell on a constant basis, or because of diet), but I've not noticed any other kind of problems with her as far as her being able to smell out the mice in the same room.
However, since you're talking a rack system for breeding mice it might be a different situation.
I'm sure someone will come along who can answer you question better. Sorry.....

it's fine to house both in the same room. obviously it would be better to be in different rooms...simply so you dont have deal with the stinky rats everytime you go to check out the snakes. LOL. other than that it really is just fine.

Take care!!

I am going to have them on rollers so I can take them out and set them outside while I check out the snakes but I do agree on the SMELL issue!

It's not the best idea to keep snakes and rats in the same room, but I doubt it will 'hurt' anything.

Btw, rats do not smell nearly as bad as mice do. A rack full of mice would have you gasping for breath within a few days---rats are not nearly that bad.

Just goes to show: One man's fragrance is another man's funk.

I can handle a 40 gallon tank filled with 30 mice whose bedding hasn't been changed for two days - no biggie.

A 20L with two "small" adult rats, even with freshly changed bedding? Bleccch.

Bottom line, IMHO? They're all vermin.

vermin......thats putting it nicely jazz/LOL

i spend like 3-5 hours a week just cleaning, not to mention seperating and organizing the damn things depending on their size.

my damn skin smells after doing it, not to mention my clothes.....i hate the dirty work!!!!!

i do agree with joe though, i would rather smell the rats than mice. mice reek in my opinion. but mice tend to "latch" on and try to get away much less than rats...when my rats see freedom they think its time to let loose. i got a chunk taken out of my hand one time by a mother who didnt want me to touch her babies. i was so pissed .LOL

I usually winter half or more of my snakes in my mouse house. Usually my corns are housed in there, as it's a "milder wintering" than the ones housed in the garage. (I have a heater to keep temps above 60 degrees in the mouse house). My kingsnakes are housed in the garage where temps can get down into the 50's sometimes. I've never noticed any problems with housing them in the "mouse house" in this way.
