Snakes mating in October

Hi im new to the form. I've had my two corn snakes since they were babies and their now 2 years old. I thought they were both girls. But i was totally wrong...Yesterday i found them mating, since i have never done brumation and i have never planed to breed what do i do??? I have tried to do some research but have not found anyone with my problem. I have several questions.

Step 1 seperate them. Step 2 I would get a nesting box in with the female. Check out Nanci's forum down below. She has a great thread on setting up a nesting box. She will go through a prelay shed before she lays. Once she does that only check on her twice a day. Once she lays you will offer her a small meal and she will go through another shed cycle short after. What you do with the eggs is up to you. If you don't want to incubate freeze them before tossing them.

It is entirely possible it is to late and she won't lay but I would seperate them either way so come spring you don't have this problem unless you choose to.

i have a few more questions:
1. how long till she will lay eggs
2. what all do i put in her cage
3. how much do i feed her (she usually eats one mouse a week)
4. does she still need a lamp
5. if i incubate the babies how do i do that
6. can she be put back in with my male or keep them separated forever
7. can you house two males together
8. when she lays the eggs how long till they hatch

6. Not unless you want them to mate again! I don't think it is typical for them to mate during this time of year... also, being that they are 2 years old (especially for the female), she may be on the small side, which may not be good. I think people usually wait until they are at least 3 years of age to breed purposely.
7. You *can*... but many people don't. Snakes aren't social by nature, and when you see them huddling together it is most likely them fighting over resources (I've heard). It is a debatable topic for sure, but personally I'd like to give each of my snakes its own space. If you decide against doing that and house them together, they definitely need a lot more space in total, a lot more hides, etc.

You should be able to find the answers to your other questions by searching this forum for breeding threads. Have a look around :)

I forgot to mention that corn snakes can be cannibalistic, and have on the rare occasion been known to eat each other. I don't know how common that is, but there are stories of that happening on here. That is definitely more common with other types of snakes as well (for example, king snakes especially!)

You don't need a heat lamp, because thy don't do anything for your snake. They dry out the viv and don't give proper heating. Get an under tank heater and a thermostat.

You should keep the eggs and have cute little baby snakes!!

1. About 10-20 days after her next shed.
2. After she sheds put a nesting box in her cage.
3. The same.
4. She really shouldn't have one anyway, a uth is alot better and won't dry out the air.
5. Keep the eggs between 75-83 degrees
6. They should be seperated forever. They should really have never lived together in the first place.
7. No no and hell no. (I mean you "can" but you never should)
8. 65-90 days depending on the incubation temp. Just when you have chewed every fingernail, pulled out all your hair and are about to give up, you will open the container and find noses!!! :)

thanks this has all helped me alot. the only reason we had them together was cause they were together in the pet shop and i thought i was suppose to have a heat lamp it has the red bulb that is suppose to be for nocturnal reptiles i did have a heat pad on the back of the tank but switched to the lamp i dont feed them together i have always done one at a time in a feed tank then cleaned them off before putting them back together. i have them both housed together in a 40 gallon tank what should they be in

i did read some where that i should feed a pregnant female double what she usually eats so is that wrong do i just stay with one mouse

No just keep feeding her the same. After she lays you will need to get her smaller food till she has regained her weight back to normal size.

k so i do one full grown mouse now will she continue to eat the whole time and when she does lay her eggs should i feed her right after or wait 1 or 2 days? and when she is done do i do pinky rats or hopper mice? i have them together in a 40 should she just stay in it and i move my male to a 30 cause thats all i have and the heating issue no lamp??? thats all i found when i was doing research before i bought them thats what everything was saying so what about a heat pad to the back of the tank

She may go off food a week or two before she sheds so don't be surprised if she does. I would put the male in the 30gal but it really doesn't matter I like to give girls a lot of room especially first time mommies because they tend to pace the tank a lot. The food is up to you I stick with mice because that is all I buy but rats are higher in fat and yeah if you have a heat mat ditch the light. You don't need it.

Oh and I feed after I take the eggs away some might wait a day or so but I give them a few hours to rest when I am sure they are done laying to rest with their eggs and then take them so again it is up to you.

i have my 40 gal tank in my living room and my 30 gal in my bed room my cats get on the 40 gal to watch my snakes is that gonna be to much stress for her

It might be I would recommend after she has her prelay shed, put a towel or something over the tank. It will help keep her more relaxed. I find it works really well with my girls. You just have to resist the urge to lift it and check on her often.

i will probably stick her in my room should i wall up the glass so it will be to where you cant see in? im only in my room to sleep so its the quietest room in my apartment

She should be fine in a quiet room. I still cover my my girls even the ones in the snake room but as long as there isn't much movement she should be OK.
