So Im having baby feeding problems

Smale492....

Sorry to have dropped off on ya. A new job plus recent hatchlings of my own has my free time pretty occupied. It's good to see that you're being persistent, but do keep in mind to not become over zealous at the same time.

That in mind, I'm brain storming here. What are your room temps, ignore the cage? Do you have anywhere that might have a room temp of 80-84°?

I'm on lunch, so gotta cut this short here. I have a potential idea, but it can also add a level of stress to the current situation.

YES!!! He ate last night I put pinky in a little bit of dawn and water and then poured boiling water over it. Placed him in a deli cup and a box and he ate within 30 minutes. So far no sign of him regurgitating this morning. Hopefully he will be out later tonight and I will be able to see if he still has he pinky in him! Thanks for everyones help and hopefully he will continue to eat. Do I feed him once a week or shorter for how young he is. I am gonna feed on tuesdays now that he has eaten. Also should I start trying to handle or wait till he is eating at a normal rate?

Well that's just HEAVY, FAR-OUT, & RIGHT-FRICKIN-ON!!!!!!

So GLAD to hear that! See? Patience & persistence go a LONG way! :dancer::dancer::dancer:

I would wait at least until the third day after a meal to handle him right now, as you want to be certain he's digested fully. After 48 hours is probably OK, but with his history, why chance anything now?

Also, since he hasn't been eating regularly and the fact that he IS a hatchling means you should probably try feeding him every 5 days at least for the next few meals so that he could build up his strength & his immune system.

Good stuff! Please keep us updated as to his progress!!! :crazy02:

Sounds good will do

I am so happy that your little one finally ate!

Doesn't it give ya a warm, fuzzy feeling inside when someone who has been facing a challenge like this finally has a positive outcome? After all, life is not all rainbows and bunny farts!!!!

How ya been Dollysmom? :wavey:

Hey smale492! Let us know when he eats his next pinky, so that I can go do 50 push-ups in the middle of the intersection up on the avenue! Everyone who sees me will think I'm NUTS, but YOU will know why I'm doin' it!! LOL!

As St. Dominic of Crown Heights always said, "May the light at the end of the tunnel not be that of an ONCOMING TRAIN!!! :eatsmiley

Ok so I am concerned... I have yet to see my snake since I fed him. I have seen tunnles of his presence and a tiny poop but not him at all. The temp on the cold side has dropped over last 2 days (but he went burried before that has even occured) i am wondering that maybe he had just been hiding to digest and maybe him eating for the first time has forced him into shed? I have ordered a thermostat and am getting a heatpad this week since so I can keep the cold side regulated too. The warm side is still perfect btw. I was wondering should I get a uth before the thermo stat comes just to get temps back up ( I have been wrapping a blanket around the tank to try and preserve heat on cold side. Also Should I try digging around for him to see if he is ok or let him be it has been a week since I have personaly seen him out since feeding (last tuesday)

Hi smale492. How ya been?

I don't see why it would be counterproductive in any way to look for your snake who you haven't seen in a week(?). I'd personally be digging mine out if I hadn't seen them or didn't know where they were in a DAY, but that's ME! What are you so concerned about? I doubt you would traumatize him in any way by letting him know you're there and won't hurt him. After all, a relationship with a little sneaky one isn't one-sided. You can only protect him SO much as to your presence in his life since he IS in captivity. On the other hand, I'm not suggesting you OVER-handle him in any way, particularly during the 48 hours following a meal, especially for hatchlings.

A finely-tuned balance of handling as you get to know your snake's proclivities is certainly acceptable, in my humble opinion. Let him know you're there. Talk to him. Sing to him. Enjoy your snake! He'll let you KNOW whether or not he appreciates it or not and then you can respond accordingly.

On another note, why would you wrap a blanket around a tank with an electric heater? If it's not warm enough with just an UTH, then you may not have the appropriately-sized heater. You have to review the specs of the heater relative to the size of the tank first. Unless I'm missing something here. I'm just concerned that you are unintentionally causing a fire hazard, which is in NO ONE'S best interests, to say the LEAST! YIKES! :hair_on_fire: :face_palm_02:

I have a blanket on the cold side where there is not heater ( I am getting one for it on friday I am just trying to keep it warm enough before I can get another one.

Hi smale492. Maybe I'm totally misunderstanding what your problem or challenge actually IS, after all, I have admitted many times that I am NOT the SHARPEST knife in the DISHWASHER, so you'll have to excuse me (the 70's & 80's were a REALLY good time to attempt Better Living Through Chemistry, so it's possible I wasn't BORN with fewer neurons than I have with me NOW! LOL! Thankfully, I can joke about that now!). However, that being said, you'll have to forgive me for not being able to comprehend some of what you're describing without being more concrete. When you say, "cold side" are you suggesting that the temps in your snake's tank are UNDER 70 degrees Fahrenheit? If so, that may be a little on the cool side, but you shouldn't become overly concerned unless it's actually cooler than THAT, in which case a stronger or larger heater should do the trick. Why would you want to install more than ONE heater in a tank that's not that large? (Again, pardon the ignorance, I'm just trying to get an accurate picture of your setup).

The cool side is like 65 ish... my worry is it is gonna get very cold where I live (wisco right now) So it can easily get lower.. much lower in the winter months so I was gonna just get a uth for that side so I can keep it in the 70's durring the winter and just unplug it in the summer.

OK, I didn't realize you were living in a sub-arctic region (only kidding ya! :poke:). However, whether you're living in Canada or Costa Rica, Cape Cod or Cape Horn, Seattle or San Juan, your little sneaky one will still have the same temperature gradient requirements! So while I sympathize with the need to keep the little squiggly one toasty, warm, and dry, I believe the need to wrap a blanket - or any other cloth material, for that matter, would indicate the immediate need for a larger heater or another of the same size. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do, in other words, but for whatever that's worth, with the recent history of your little sneaky one's regurge incident, I wouldn't feed him if I were you until you are certain that he has a warm place to go to digest properly. Also, if and when you DO feed him, you might wanna think about slitting the pinky a couple of times down its back, to ensure a quicker rate of digestion.

Just sayin'. :my2cents_01:

I hope everything works out for you!

I actually use two heat pads in the winter for my large viv that sits on the floor near the windows. I set the warm side for 85 and the cool side for 75. You can use two thermostats or if you are on a budget you can use a rheostat for the cool side since some minor fluctuations occur normally on the cool side. Be sure to have thermometers with probes on both sides.

It is perfectly acceptable to cover part of the viv with a cloth or towel to help hold in heat and or humidity. I put towels over my vivs in the winter, being sure to leave part of the screen cover uncovered for air exchange. Also, if your viv sits on a solid surface (as opposed to a wire rack or something open like that) to never block off the air flow under the viv where the heat pad or pads are. That does create a fire hazard. I just use cotton bath towels which I can also dampen by spritzing them with water to keep the humidity to a reasonable level.

I know that Karl uses two heat pads under his larger viv as well, both with thermostats. I know it is not very common but it is one of many solutions. In the winter my cool side temps in the vivs with single heat pads can get down to 66 at night, but rarely so. My other viv was getting to 64 on the cool side so that's why I added the heat pad. The larger the viv, the more difficult it is to heat if the ambient temperature drops. I don't know about you, but keeping my house at 75 in the winter is not only too warm for me, but it is impractical from an energy standpoint.

So good news haha. I found my little guy after searching through tank. He was just burried on warm side and seemed very aware (well not very but aware enough to what was going on will explain). I found a few more little poops and cleaned that out. I noticed (not 100% sure) that his eyes were not as red as normal (maybe just lighting or my groggyness in the morning). So I am thinking he may be going or is getting ready to shed. I dont really remeber how long this process is if this is the case. And luckily my thermosat is coming tomorrow so the tank will be all back to normal for cool side temps. (luckily today is going to be a warm day so Im not worried).

Sounds as though everything is coming together for you ( both ) ..

I haven't read all through the thread but as regards feeding I warm my mice up with a 20 second blast off the hairdryer before offering to my snakes , works everytime although sometimes it takes a couple of tries so reheat each time ...

As regards the shedding process ..... the eye colour change suggests that it is indeed going into shed mode . I wouldn't worry how long it takes as it may vary each time ( and for each snake ) but as soon as the eyes go back to normal and it gets active again and possibly gets a bit of colour back again you just need to spray the Viv a couple of times each day until you see old shedded skin on the floor somewhere :)

As regards
