I've seen him at the other shows I've been to in Columbia, so he must be
a regular. . . .One of the main attractions. Although I said a while ago,
he was walking it around on a leash. . .it's more like the Monitor was
walking him around !!

Tell me about it. . . . . I know there are a lot of really responsible and really
knowledgeable people who deal with venomous animals all the time, but
the large majority of people who buy Hots, simple do it as a Status Symbol
or to appear "Macho"! . . . . These are the kinds of people they do those
shows about on Animal Planet (the ones you end up hearing about their
horror stories while almost dying).
I can fully understand someones fascination with reptiles, and a lot of the
Hots are BEAU-TI-FUL!!, but the danger far outweighs the beauty of them.
I'll admire them from a distance, but wouldn't dream of owning one myself.

Personally, I think animals like that should require the owners to take a class
requiring several hours of study and tests, to get a permit to purchase any
kind of venomous animal. (like a conceled wepons permit). Along with showing
photo copies of your last Will and Testement, and listings of your next of kin.
 
Nice pictures Spurt...I was there as well...I wish I'd known you were going, I would have love to have met up and talked SC football for a second with you. The show was pretty good, there was a lot to look at and surprisingly i came home empty-handed (proud of myself).

I looked at and almost bought several adult corns, but talked myself out of them.

OH I also talked to Jason (I think is his name) from Southeastern Reptile Rescue...the SnakesKin show.
 
Here is another picture of the monitor on its stand resting. It may be waiting for a dog or small child to get close enough. There were no barriers for the public.

I saw the venomous containers without the red tape and mentioned it to the man behind the table. He told me to mind my own business and walked away. That was on Saturday morning.

The show regulations for the vendors spell out very clearly that red tape is required on anything that contained a venomous animal. I also saw a few animals that were on the list of banned reptiles in the state and county.

This monitor is quite gentle, I've seen him at other shows. As for the vendors, I have seen some who are proud that they have animals that are protected by CITES, at least this time I didn't see any Hyde Co. Pygmies. Did the regulations say red tape around the top, or like a label will do? Because some of the display cages can't really accommodate lots of red tape, lol.

CW . . Wish I had known too. Would definitely like to have shook your hand.
I did the same thing. I hate going to those shows and seeing all the Corns
and King snakes, and having to stop myself from taking some of them home.
I promised myself I'd stop at three, and so far, I'm sticking to it. They had
a Miami Phase though that almost made me break my promise.

That guy you were talking about (Jason). He put on a very nice presentation.
That (albino / Lukestic (sp) Pine snake was a very nice looking snake. His
show made me start looking at a lot of Pine and Bull snakes too. Those were
some really nice looking animals !!!

. . . GO COCKS !!!
 
Man I missed his presentation, wish I had seen that. I looked at a couple of the pine and bull snakes as well...

Cinder is really gentle and is often walking around with the public. My mother even got a little cuddle in while they were cruising around. That's the last animal I would ever worry about attacking me.

We went on Saturday for a brief visit. I had to work but squeaked out a little browsing time. Picked up two cresties and vanishing stripe corn.

The Charlotte show I will there both days, all day and I'm having an after party at my house on Saturday.
 
Why would anyone take their lizard to the show to "show off?" I would be scared he would pick something up or get hurt. Why endanger your beloved pet like that?

This monitor (and most BT's as a whole, mostly) doesn't reflect the typical "Monitor personality". Matter of fact, you can walk up to him and pat him on the ribs like you would a large dog, and he doesn't mind it at all. Shawn doesn't just "show him off", he sells pictures with Cinder. It's no different than people doing it with large Burms or other big animals. Also, Shawn educates the people about BT's as well... He's one of the few people to actually sucessfully breed BT's that I'm aware of. When he does have babies for sale, he brings Cinder along, not to use him as a gimmick to sell, but to show the people what they are getting into.

As BB and Snakewhisperer said, he's a gentle giant.


And btw BB, that afterparty sounds like a blast!
 
The guy that did the Reptile Rescue presentation (think he was from
Jacksonville Florida), He had a large Black Throat Monitor in his show too.
Said he takes it and the 4 year old Alligator to schools, and Boy Scout
groups and shows them. Said he's never had an issue with either. . . for
safety purposes, he keeps the Gator's mouth taped shut, but said he and
his wife hold the Gator all the time at their house without the tape on, and
he is very gentle.

Heck yeah! I'm grilling burgers and things so you guys are more than welcome to come! I'll have info posted as show time get closer.

Matt is right, Cinder is one of the best animal ambassadors out there. Very well taken care of and a great education animal.

Cinder is AWESOME!! It was so insane seeing him walk down the isle sticking out his foot long tongue and just chilling! haha

I coulda took a pic with my phone but wan not thinking, so did anyone get a pic of the HUGE and I do mean HUGE Gaboon Viper. It was in a big plastic container and it was a male. He looked like he was almost a foot thick and would weigh 35 lb!! Of course I suck on measurements, but he was soooo big. I've seen a lot of Gabby's, but never one that big. I'd love to see a pic of him if anyone has one.........

Seemed to me like there wern't as many hots this year and more colubrids, boas, pythons than last year, but then again last year was my first time going.
 
I saw that Gaboon and was in awe of it's massive bulk. I did not get a pic because mom was too busy being paranoid of the spiders back there. We werein a big hurry too, only there for an hour or so and had to jet.

I really hope you guys can come to the after party! Plus you can see how the big boy is doing!!

Not sure, probably one of the ones in the middle-left in the hot section if you had your back to the entrance (note the venomous cup beside the corn).

Think that was at the same table with the guys who sold the Red
Side Garters too. They had a lot of different snakes there. Same
table that had the Spitting Cobra, The Coral, The Copperhead (in the
pictures) as well as the Garters

If that's the case, we got one of their cards. They were Green Desert Reptiles and their addy is gdreptiles.com. These were the ones we got our garters from.

Pretty sure that's where this one was.
I took that picture pretty early Saturday. My wife and I got there about
10:30 so I'm guessing I took that picture about 10:45 or 11:00. One of
the prettiest Corns I saw at the show. . . I went back around 1:30 to see
if I could get another picture of it, and it had sold.
