someone shoot me I'm an idiot!

Geeze, now I feel great! Unfortunately I have no means to use Fedex at this time. My only choice is to use UPS via reptilesexpress.com They were very angry to learn the snake did not arrive by 10:30, the time they were told overnight packages would arrive and they worked with me to make a small matter of amends for the issues. Rep Ex is a great company in and of themselves. In the future all my snakes go to the hubs, not to homes. I will amend that on my site. As soon as I have a credit card to be able to become fedex certified I will do so but it is not in my immediate future, much to my dismay. Thank you for all the information and warnings.

I have read very good things about Reptile Express on the BOI...

but haven't tried them, since I am happy with FedEx. I have read so many accounts of how workers have to rush with packages at BOTH places that I ASSUME they will be playing kickball with each package, and I pack them to withstand it.

That means A LOT of cushioning with crumpled newspaper - enough to ensure that each cup or bag is secure and can't move around the box, even if dropped or turned upside down. In addition, I put enough aspen or paper towel in each cup that the snake can't move TOO much, although it can push its way around the cup for some movement. That way it won't be flung around the cup if the box is dropped or turned upside down. Another plus to this tight packing is that the snakes can't accidentally be pushed against a heat or cold pack if they are being used. They should always be securely separated from those as far as possible in a relatively small box.

When I shipped I put some crumpled news paper inside the snake bag with the snake (he was over 3 feet but under 4 so needed a bag) as well as around the bag inside the box. The only thing I forgot was the derned ice pack and I am still kicking myself on that. But I am learning!

Another little tip for ice packs...

I drop off my packages directly at the FedEx center, just before they close at 8 p.m. So I am not worried about the heat on my end. But if the package is to be delivered instead of held, and the destination is pretty warm, then I wrap the cold pack in a few layers of bubble wrap, and tape it tightly shut. That might not stop it totally from melting, but should slow it down some so that it might do a little good the next day.
