Still researching for "that one"

Hi all :)

Okay, I have weighed the choices... I still have NO idea what my next snake is going to be. I have considered making room for a hogg island boa, getting started on a MBK, and have been even considering a children's python. I don't have much space in my room... So if it was a normal tank I could only do a 10 gal right now...

So, what I have right now in mind is:

Kenyan Sand Boa

African House snake

-

which do you guys think is the better of the two. Personally I am looking at these because of the size they are housed in and... well their eyes! I LOVE the slit eyes! I'm not a fan of the chubbiness of the KSB but I love the coloration.. and I'm just afraid I have no idea on how to get an African house snake... There is lots of conventions (like the Tinley Park reptile convention, and this all animal expo far out) and.. a little info on these guys average prices would be great (I'm really bad at finding these links and stuff.. ^^; )

to be honest I'm bummed that I still don't have enough room for a Hogg Island Boa ... v__v I love boas! Its just the price and space... blah

and... boy or boy.. if i could have every rat snake there was i would. but you see, the bf doesn't like snakes too much, so only one more for me and not anything in a 20 gallon or over.. well.. for now ;)

Which ever, if you decide to get a snake or another snake, it should be the snake you desire the most, your heart's desire. This is an animal, a pet, a companion you need to commit to caring for for the next 10-40 years (depending on the species), cleaning up it's poo, helping it shed, feeding it, worrying about it, taking it to the vet, etc...

Just things to think about...get what you love the most because you're gonna be cleaning after it's poo for years, hehe. =)

Personally I'd go for the KSB, I love the mini boas, but as Cassandra said it's really down to you - only you know what you really want :)

What Plissken said. Just get what you want. Personally, I think KSBs are atrociously ugly and look more like big earthworms than snakes. But I think African house snakes (especially red ones) are "dreamy." Just decide on what you want, and then find it. Neither is all that difficult to find.

Don't African House Snakes get big, though? I'd go for something I was interested in, that wasn't going to outgrow the 10 gallon.

I'm kind of in the same situation myself. I bought two 24x24 cages, one for a new snake, one for Maizey to move up to, which leaves Maizey's 20L vacant, so I think my Eastern Hoggy Addy will move into that, which leaves a vacant 10 gallon.

My other 10 gallon has my male Tri-Color Hoggy, who will always stay small enough.

You should look into the dwarf island boas. I just recently got a Caulkers Cay boa and he's a total gem so far. The males shouldn't get more than 4ft, so don't need anything too big. They're darker than a Hogg Island, but still have the definite boa look. Price wise, where I got mine, he was a little less than the Hogg of about the same age. Good luck with your search and hope you find the perfect little friend.

Nope. A male AHS could live in a 10gal for life. Males don't get much over 2 feet, and females don't get much over 3 feet. Generally, both sexes are smaller than corns.

The AHS I see at the snake store all the time must be a female- she looks to be about 36 inches.

Those dwarf island boas are really cool, I think.

Don't worry, I get attached to anything.. even things that arnt alive (ie: ball)

love is never an issue ;) I would love a reticulated python just like i would love a precious kitten! I love being a pet owner as I never had the chance when I was young. Thank you for your advice

i'm so torn, i can agree but in real life (i've held one) i .. actually loved it! but it was a baby baby... so.

;-; I've read about these.. Yet, I can't bring myself to get any other BCI than the Hogg, I fell in love!

Thanks all, although some of you say its not that hard to find either? I really don't have that much resources (.. or I'm not aware of them) and in conventions I'm afraid that any AHS that is there will be gone before I even arrive.. nor do I know any of the breeders. :shrugs: or anyone for that matter.

Search threads on African House snakes on this forum. Someone here breeds them. I think it's lefty_moussolini, but I'm not 100% positive.

Thanks, I sent him a PM :)

I have been searching on this forum for AHS and found lots of pretty pictures... :sidestep:

Actually the childrens do not get that big either, another small python. I am personally turn between those or the Sawu python, both small pythons.

Other type of small boas are also Rosy and rubber boas. I personally own a pair of Rosys and I think they rock.

Normal KSBs are easy to find, and relatively inexpensive. I'm afraid to ever hold one or I will have to have one.

Tom Thompson breeds them, here, or VMS Herp has them, too. I've even seen them in snake stores, and of course shows.

ohhh... but can childrens pythons, if smaller, live in a 10 gal?

because i will buy one in an instant if so!

ehhh i'm not a fan of rubber boas ;)

YES the holding part is addictive!
