Still to Small?

Ziggy is 17 and ¾ inches long. Is he still to small to get probed? A lot of pet stores have said to wait till he’s bigger. I’ve found one I trust but the owner is never in so I’m waiting to get a hold of him and ask him to probe ziggy. The guy breeds corns. Oh another note if he’s that big is he really and 05 hatchling?

Thanks Joe lots have people have said that just when I call around no one is willing to do it till he’s bigger I’m hoping this guy that breeds corns will be willing.

So can anyone help me with the size thing? I saw a post on here the other day where someone said there 05 was 15in’s long and someone thought that corn could have been an late 04.

They can be too small to probe safely. ;)

It is not hard to cause trauma to a small animal. The smallest probes are about the size of a pin. In the hands of the wrong person.......

That is a hard question to answer without seeing the snake. Each one is different. Is there a reason you need to know immediately??

I don't like probing any of mine until they are big enough to use the "second smallest" probe on them. It is quite a bit more dull than the smallest one.

You snake is most likely an '04 if it is 17 inches long.

Don't people usually pop them instead of probe them, at that age?

In any case, a lot of people can tell by looking at the way the tail tapers, especially from the side. Maybe you can post some photos.

Thanks :) I'll just wait and keep calling him and him....
I don't plan on ever breeding so it's no big deal what ever he ends up being.

Glad to know you think he's and 04. when i got him he wa sin a tank with a bunch of other babies that where much smaller.Guess that guy didn't know much better.

I could try taking pic's of his tail. I have Love's book and it talksa about that. Tail thing. I'll take some photos soon and post them and let you guys have a go! weeeheee :crazy02:

At 17" the snake may still be too young to visually sex. It is much easier to do with older animals.

then i'll just wait till he's bigger..for both things...prob or taking a snap shot. :-offtopic I saw on some other post that someone was feeding there over 16in' corn fuzzies. I'm feeding Ziggy big pinkes. I don't know the weigth i just always ask for the bigger ones. SHould i feed him a few small pinkies for a few feedings and see how he handles that?

Stuff . . .

I have an '04 that is about 18" and is eating small fuzzies. It's more about how big around your snake is than how long . . . 1.5X the widest girth of your snake is about right, I usually choose to err on the side of caution.

You could have a small '04 or a large '05. My smallest '04 is about 18", my largest is about 23" (guesstimate, haven't measured lately), and they are probably not too far apart in age, some are born bigger and grow faster, some are slower.

Probably the pet stores don't have probes small enough for your snake, because you can probe small snakes with small probes. Good luck tho, I hope you can find out soon. :)
