Stunning a Mouse?

Spitfire

Snakeless
I heard that if you're feeding live and you move up to bigger mice (with claws and teeth) that it safer to stun the mouse first. Is this true and how do you stun it?

Actually, it would be safer to switch to F/T mice. It is easier, more convenient, and safer for your snake. There is really no benefit to the snake by feeding live prey. This is just my opinion.

It's def safer to stun the mouse if ur gonna take the live option.

However, as stated above, the safest option would be to feed the snake f/t.

Spitfire - That is my method, and if you hit it just right, you get the stunned prey and not a dead prey (which sometimes takes more than one whack). I know, I expect alot of "OH that's cruel!", but I can't afford CO2, especially for the number of mice/rats I have, and any other method is also not feasible for my situation. I've gotten quite good over the years ( a cement block is perfect) and death is almost immediate about 95% of the time. Ask our prison system if they can make the same claim.

Susan - What did you say your method was? I got that it had something to do with hitting the mouse but how?

You grab the mouse or rat by the tail and you swing it so that its head strikes the edge.
You do not really need the table, you can swing and hit them on the floor. They are being killed from blunt trauma, if you hit them right they die from cranial damage and a broken neck.
You cannot be queasy about this, you need to really swing or you could just hurt them. When you do it right there is a loud thwack and hey may twitch a little but they are not squeaking.
With pinkies I find the best thing to do is throw them on the floor. I tried just putting them in the freezer but I didn’t feel good about doing it that way
