Substrate Question - Pellets?

Dale

Interventions won't work
Forgive my ignorance if this is well known in the world of viv's, but I have been a newspaper/aspen purist since the late 80's. I've never researched other substrates, other than the ones we are supposed to stay away from.

I recently took in a BCI adoption locally which included a nice tank filled with, what I thought at a glance was... rabbit food?? First thought was, thank god I'm getting this snake out of the hands of these people.

Long story short, I decide to leave the boa in its home tank for a little while to get him acclimated, and notice that when water hits these pellets, they disassociate into what seems to be compacted sawdust? Is that what it is? Is this used by anyone?

Well I've never used those pellets for snakes. I did try them as a bedding for rodents, but I didn't like it. Some people now use CareFresh, its like a chewed up and spit out paper product. I like it but recently it has gotten more expensive. I guess since more people are using it they had to raise the price, lol. susang

I've got some pellet stuff made of granite that I have never tried that the company rep keeps calling and bugging me about. I saw it at Daytona, and thought it looked cool, although it wasn't something I'd use myself. It's dark grey. I would think any type of rabbit pellet thing would be bad for snakes because snakes spill so much water. Or maybe because I spill water putting the dishes in with the snakes. I had tortoises on it and it was moldy all the time.
