Substrate temps?

Hey guys, just a quick question!

What are the ideal temps for substrate level? My thermostat says 86f but the probe is situated under the tub on top of the heating pad itself, as suggested by several herpers i have gone to for tips.

But the temp of the substrate, which I just checked with my IR thermometer, is hovering arounf 76f on the hot side. That's WAY too cold, isn't it?

So now I'm stuck - do I stick the probe back in the tank on the substrate, or what?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You want the temp to be correct at the closest your snake can get to the heat source. Corns like to burrow. Keep the probe where it is.

Is it really okay that the surface temps are so low, though? I almost never see him burrowing and he spends the majority of his time in the warm hide.

I also have my thermostat probe between the UTH and glass on the outside and a thermometer probe on the glass inside the warm hide. My snake has burrowed down to the glass when he has needed/wanted to.

P.S. Digital thermometers with a probe that you can place on the glass inside to measure the temp there are super cheap on eBay. They will be labeled "aquarium" but are the same thing you buy in the pet store for $10 or more. You will have to wait, though. Free shipping, but from China.
