i dont know if there is a post about this already but i cant seem to find one, i was just wondering what substrate everyone likes to use?
i use beech chips at the moment, has a huge bag so wont be changing anytime soon lol
has anyone tried sand or anything for their snakes?(if so what sand) or anything that you wouldnt think of straight away as substrate?

I was told not to use sand for snakes. I use aspen shavings myself. It smells nice, makes spot cleaning very easy, and I find that it looks nice as well.

Sand can get between the scales and cause irritation. The most common substrate choices are aspen, carefresh, newspaper and paper towels.

ahh of course! that should have been obvious! lol my bad!
i am going to get aspen next, ive not long since bought a huge back of beech chipping

Bark or wood chips are more common substrates in the UK, as aspen has been difficult to get hold of over here in the past. However, suppliers are catching up with the US and aspen is more available here these days (although it might be more expensive). I've used bark chips for years and I like them, so think I'll be sticking with them.

I used to use sani-chips, but now I use eco-earth. I prefer eco-earth because it looks like dirt (its coconut husk) and matches my viv decorations better :) its also easy for my corn to burrow in if she wants

I just started using Sani Chips. I love the stuff! It clumps well for spot cleaning, and almost has a sand-like appearance. Granted, they can't really burrow in it, but they can't with paper towels or newspapers, either - unless you count going under the paper as burrowing.

I bought a few large bags, so I am set for a year or more.

i like the look of aspen, just such a shame its so expensive over here in the UK :(
where could i see what the prices are for the eco-earth? would they do it on ebay?

I use Aspen. It evenlooks comfy cozy, and Bunny really enjoys making little tunnel systems throughout it.

I just looked at ebay. There's some eco earth on there (not sure if they'd ship to the uk or not, if that's what you're wanting). I'm sure you could find somewhere to order it if needed. I think it runs about $10 a bag or so... maybe a little more.

I use aspen shavings...its neat and easy to burrow under for my little guy and it doesn't give off any oils that will affect the snake.
