suitable for rats???

I would think 1 inch wire may allow rat pinkies to slip through. I use 1/2 square for the tops of mine.
 
One inch a bit big for rats period. I would go with 1/2 inch. My biggest boy can get his nose through that just fine, and 1 inch would allow for his whole head, which could result in his getting stuck or grabbing at things he should be.
 
I just got a large tote from walmart, one of the clear ones with a locking lid, i cut a large square out of the lid and put 1/4 inch hardware cloth over the hole for better ventilation. just have to make sure the tote is all smooth on the inside. I have had a pair of rats in this setup for a while now and no problems. If you dont use the wire on top you have to drill alot of air holes high on the tote or condensation will build up.
 
Soldering iron works best for that.

I've been using ventilation on the side of my tubs and that's worked, and it also did when I had a large cut out on the lid of a small tub I used to keep a buck in when he wouldn't co-hab with some youngsters.
