Summer trip to the U.S.

If you want to ride a train in the US, buy a USA Rail Pass.
30days/12 segments for about $550...
the Grand Canyon Railway is from Williams, AZ. to the South Rim
of the canyon and return.. www.thetrain.com

Come on out to SoCal Dave!! There are many members here
and some can show you around to some great places.
Amusement Parks, Zoo's, State Parks, Herping spots..
we have it all.. lol

If you have seen NYC you have seen all the big cities you need. Skip LA and San Francisco and Phoenix. Fly into Las Vegas and say hi to Stephanie and then catch one of the shuttles to Southern Utah ($25). I’ll let you take one of my trucks and you can hit all the parks Katie mentioned. I live within 200 miles of Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches, Bryce, and many others. If you bring the truck back in one piece I’ll teach you how to fly fish.

I got an old Pontiac for $400 a year or two ago. It was a horrible looking car. But I had sat in it and got nostalgic for the days that cars had seats that could actually fit 3 in the front.
I had to put new tires on it but got them done for another 300 probably. That car ran for a long time, probably still does. It was discovered though that the suspension sagged quit a bit and was wearing out tires quickly. For what you want, that would be a perfect car, one set of tires is cheaper than the trains!
However I'd just look at Craigslist in whatever city you'll be landing in, see what's available rather than holdout for a particular kind.

Wow can I have that offer to Wade! I need to travel now after reading this thread. Grass is always greener itch I guess. I have the White Mountains in New Hampshire that are awesome to hike through though.

Forget everything I said. This is the deal you want.

Sounds like Wade's offer would be a wonderful start!

If you join a group such as Hospitality Exchange http://hospex.net/ or couch surfing http://www.couchsurfing.org/ , you will be able to find places to stay and meet new people at the same time. You might want to bring (or buy) a small tent and some bedding. Many people who don't have room in the house will let you camp out in the yard for a couple of nights. And I bet if you ask around here (on CS), you will find some members who could put you up or let you camp for a couple of days, too.

When I was in my 20s (back in the '70s), I took several trips around the US, both by car and by Greyhound bus, and mostly stayed with reptile people all over the place. Every young person should do something like that (and even old people if so inclined!). It really gives you a great perspective to see and meet people from different places, and see the scenery, animals, etc.

Have fun!

You're all so kind, it sounds brilliant.

Wade, you're a class act and I'd love to meet you. And of course I'll bring your truck back in one piece (is it American? If so, I can't make any guarantees ;))

I also have a couch if you come out this far west. But personally, I think you'd see so many more amazing sights around Wade's neck of the woods. I sense that nature isn't all you're after though, and the Mormon girls are probably not what you're looking for, lol.

On second thought though, all the places Wade mentioned will be full of young adventurous travelers from all over! I'm sure you'll have a great time no matter what you decide.
I'm jealous, you'll probably see more of the US than I have!

My dream vacation for years now is to see the National Parks. But most of all to observe a herd of wild mustangs in the wild at late spring/ early summer so I can observe the new foals. Want to ride in on horseback & camp out & just study them & enjoy the beauty of the terrain that they live in. Someday.

Tim you sound like a romantic cowboy. Last summer my wife and I were riding our 4 wheelers in the desert around the Valley of Fire. Really cool (very hot) area. We came across a small herd of mustangs. One stallion and 4 mares. It was pretty cool to see them. We see burrows quit often as well.

Here are some pictures of the Valley of Fire and Hells Kitchen. This is my wife and daughter. Lake Mead in the distance. Don’t even think about it Dave, she’d eat you for breakfast.
