Summer

Brizzle

Craziness
I went to check on my snakes and give them water. Kaa's cage was 90 degrees. It's 72 degrees outside, I can't imagine how it'll be during Summer. What do people do in the Summer to keep their snakes from getting too hot? I know it'll get way over 100 degrees here in California, anyone have any suggestions? I don't use the AC because it's expensive, only fans. This is my first summer ever having my snakes, so I'm clueless as to what to do. Thanks. :)

Do you use a thermometer with a probe to get that temp? If not, it may not be accurate. If so, do you use anything to heat the cage?

If so, it should be on a regulated thermostat. Then it would turn off when it reached the max temp you set it for.

If not, then the cage needs extra ventilation to circulate the air and help cool it. You may have to run a fan in the room (but not directly on the cage- drafts could lead to R.I.). Or add more air holes to the cage to lower the build-up of hot air.

I think the problem is going to be ambient temps. I will have the same issues in the coming months. A probe thermometer won't tell you what your ambient is. It only reads the temp at the probe. I use one of those indoor/outdoor thermometers from K-Mart. The probe reads the heat mat("outside" reading), and the unit itself reads the ambient on the cool side("inside" reading). It also tells relative humidity...all for about $20.

I would recommend having an oscillating fan in the room, and maybe drop a couple of ice cubes in the water dish. The melting ice will lower the temp in the viv, and an oscilating fan will increase the air flow in the room, which *should* draw the hot air out of the viv, without causing too much of a direct draft inside the viv.

Thanks. Cool, I have an oscillating fan. I'll see if that helps. I have the lamps off right now..And the snakes temps are around 80.
