Surprise! - I'm a Grandma!

We had hatchling # 10 slither out of the egg this afternoon, a cute little amel that seemed a little too sweet when I picked it up to weigh it. I hope it stays that way! lol

Here is a pic of it:

It does seem to be a bite camera shy too, wouldn't sit still no matter what! lol kept peeking out at me from the moss!

There is only 1 egg left to hatch, and it pipped around the same time that this last hatchling emerged. It appears to be an amel as well which would bring the count to 5 snows (including the dead one) and 7 amels out of a clutch of 12 eggs.

I also wonder if these particular snakes can count too. For this reason:
On the first hatching date 1 corn emerged, the second 2, the third 3, and today - the fourth day of hatchings - 4. It would work out perfectly if I had five more eggs to hatch instead of just one for tomorrow or the next day though! lol :crazy02:

Who knows... I'm just happy that we had 8 healthy hatchlings out of the ten that have emerged so far. I'm still worried about the runt snow, but it's survived its second day out of the egg so who knows. The runty amel is doing much better even though it did weigh less. It roams a bit around its new home and seems to be healthier then the snow. Time will tell.

I know my job is only beginning, as the first feeding is yet to come, but I can't help but be excited about these little babies. I will of course be posting more pictures once they have shed and eaten.

I only just realized that I lost track of this thread for a few days and had to dig back all the way to page 7 to find it again! lol.

It is a good thing that at least from each twins sets 1 survived!
Yes, very nice. They are both getting stronger too, even the little snow that came out with her umbilical still attached. I keep rooting for him/her!

The last hatchling came out DAYS ago, back on the 10th and it's an amel. So, if I count just the hatchlings that made it out of the egg, we have 4 snows and 7 amels for a grand total of 11 - oddly enough that's how many we expected to have hatch even after a couple of eggs went bad. :shrugs: weird.

Here's a pic of the last hatchling:

Most of the little cuties are in the blue right now, though the first snow shed early yesterday evening. I'll be offering it a first meal later tonight as well as giving a shot at sexing it. I've only ever popped two males out of the times I have tried and both of those were more luck then skill, so unless I can tell it's a boy for sure, I'm not confirming what they are! lol.

I'll post pics of post shed hatchlings later today as I'm reluctant to disturb the snakes at this time of day!

We've now had a total of 3 critters shed and I offered them food for the first time this evening. The little Amels #'s 2 & 3 gobbled their mouse down within 10 minutes after tucking them into the deli cups with a f/t each. The snow, #1, has not yet eaten, but I'll leave it alone until I go to bed and see if it will change its mind. Here are a couple of pics of post shed and post fed! lol

#1 - the unfed snow:

#2 - the little piggy amel:

and #3 - the second hungry amel of the night:

I was very happy with the amels' feeding responses, I thought they would give me more trouble as they'd both gave me difficulties when I put them into the deli cups. The snow went in just fine, but I'll have to wait a bit longer to see if it will eat. Got to keep my fingers crossed!

ENJOY...

We had three more slip out of their skins over the night and like all loving grandmothers I couldn't help but snap a few more pics of the children as they were given fresh water and had their old skin checked over for eye caps and tail pieces.

Here they are:

#5, a fiesty little amel that has struck at me a few times.

#6, the pretty little snow with the odd pattern.

and #8, another little amel who has the deepest reds so far out of the shedders.

I've not yet offered these three their first meal, but hope that they eat as well as the first three to shed. (The first snow ate just fine after the lights went out.)

Hope you enjoyed the pics. I'll be posting more as the remaining hatchlings shed and take their first meals!

congrats on all your babies! i hope they all eat for you. And i'm rooting for the little runty snow!

Thank you, I'm rooting for the little ones too. Both are growing stronger, though they have not yet shed or eaten. I'm expecting them to be the last to take their first sheds but I could be wrong.

We've had two more shed in the last couple of days and will be offering food to them later tonight. Quite predictably the little 2g amel shed and I'll have to find an extra small new born or just give it the head of a small mouse. Thankfully I've got plenty of pinkies in the freezer for once! lol

Here are a couple pictures:

That only leaves 4 snakes left to shed for the first time.

Thanks for looking!
