Taking Your Snake Outside?

I'm at work and haven't been able to look long for another thread someone may have started on the subject, but a notice a lot of corn snake Moms and Dads taking the kids out to the grass. At what point do you trust your snake enough to do this? How do you judge when they're ready? What precautions do you take? How long do you usually have them out? Have you ever had any make a run for it? I'll probably think of more questions later.

I take all my snakes outside but I only let my adult snow got in the grass. She's really mellow and likes to explore. I always stay within a few paces of her and move her as needed. We have a large backyard. I keep her away from bushes she could get tangled up in, and away from fences so she doesn't go under them

As you get more confident handling your snake, you can then decide if you want to take her out. I only take mine outside when the weather is not too hot or cold, and I like to have a container on hand that I can quickly put them into if need be. I also would not recommend taking your baby out if you don't have a fenced yard.

But the main thing is that you need to feel completely confident handling your snake, so if she decides to make a break for it, you can safely restrain her.

Snakes In Your Shirt?

I wasn't asking for my baby, but for my adult male Ryu. He's a big fan of being held and I wanted to find a new experience for him, like sitting out in the grass together or something. But our yard isn 't fenced in, so that's a definitive no to that adventure.

He's very mellow and loves to be held and make skin-to-skin contact. I often wear dresses, and when I sit on the couch and tuck the bottom under my butt and knees (so he can't get out), he'll go round and round my waist until he gets comfortable; then he'll curl up and sleep like he's in a reptile hammock (which he's too big for now). I started doing it when he was new because his Mom used to put him in her bra when he was a baby, and he was too big for that when I got him. I figured it helped familiarize him with my scent in a way that was dark, warm and secure for him, and now we do it because he likes to. He also loves to hide in my hair, and I grow it long just for him. He'll start off on my shoulder, cruise around my head and neck and play in my hair, and when he gets bored or cold he'll pop down the front of my shirt. @_@

Yeah, I know it's weird. X_x But I can't be the ONLY one, jah?

No, you aren't alone! I have a couple boys with a "crush" on me, and I haven't been felt up like this since high school!!! :roflmao:

My girl is like this. First chance she gets and it's down the front of the shirt. I always have to warn people when they hold her that if given the chance, she will feel you up. lol

Hatchlings can disappear _so_ fast, so be really careful with them outside. They also get hot and cold fast. If it's 90 out, it's too hot for snakes.

If you take an adult out and set it in the grass, make sure to watch for birds. I've had a hawk try to take a pigeon right at my feet. My snakes are funny outside. If I take them out and set them in the grass, they just try to crawl under me.

Is there any problem with a snake that goes out in the grass picking up mites or other parasites. That is my main concern.

No- snake mites don't live out in the wild. They live in pet stores and reptile shows.

I guess if you have ticks in your yard, the snake could get them, but if you or your dogs/cats don't even have any, they probably aren't in your yard.

Idea...

Have you ever gone to a big retailer pet store and seen those temporary enclosures they have puppies in out front? I wonder if, with some hinges and plywood, you could build one for your snake without the holes. Lean it up against the side of the house most of the time, but set it up and give your snake some room to explore where they can't bolt quickly. They could climb over it (so you'd need to watch them; I would anyway) but you'd have some warning of escape because they 'd try to climb up. You just move to that side and guide them back down, and if it's clear they're the getting to feisty you can take them back inside, instead of chasing them into some bushes.

Low trees are good, too, and fences. But snakes can get up a tree where you can't reach, so you have to be careful.

Thanks nancy, i'm glad to here you can't get mites from the outside, but now i'm leery about going to the reptile show in oct, and my daughter works for petco, are there any precautions i should take to prevent bringing anything home to my girl. She doesn't take care of the reptiles, but is in the store during cleaning time.

I read that someone put their aspen shavings in the freezer before using it to kill mites that may be in there. Anyone know if that's really advantageous?
