Tarantulas, Anyone?

Well, today i was looking around at the pet shop(as i often do), and the guy who works there, who i talk to a lot, said he had a tarantula that he wanted to give away and asked if i wanted a free tarantula. And, yeah, of course i do. So, I got my parents to agree to it, so i'm probably going to pick it up tomorrow. I think he said it was a King Baboon Tarantula.. Which i know are pretty aggressive, so i know that i need to respect its' space and shouldn't handle it. I've been reading up on it, and i know it's not supposed to be a great spider for beginners.. but i think with the obsessive amount of research i do on every little thing that i get interested in, i'll be able to take care of it fine.

But, yeah.. I just wanted to know if anyone here has tarantulas and what kinds. Any little tips or advice to someone new to spider-keeping are welcome, too :)

I'm a real tarantula lover. I don't own any at present, but I hope to at some point. Congrats on your new spider!

For the record, it's isn't recommended to handle any tarantula... for their own safety if nothing else. They're actually really fragile and if they fall or jump you can have a disaster in your hands...

And of course just wash your hands carefully after going in the tank or handling the spider (if you decide you're going to handle it.) Just in case any itchy hairs get left on you. ;)

We need pictures by the way!!

I saw a King Baboon at a petstore I frequent awhile back. The guy there opened it's cage for me....just to show me how it acted. Just the simple act of opening the cage caused it to burst from it's burrow and rear back. LOL! No thanks!

I just got a Rosie though who I've quickly fallen in love with. He crawls right into your hand (allthough I'm not handleing him really, just because I'm sure he's not crazy about it...and I don't want him to get hurt...but I had to take him out for the obligatory photograph...hehehe). I dig him though. He's a fascinating little critter.

I have a few T's and hope to get a few more. A king baboon is most likely a Citharischius crawshayi, they get big and have a attitude to match. I don't have one but do know they need a very deep substrate to make a burrow in. They are a pet hole most of the time. You can go to arachnoboards.com for lots of great tarantula info.

Okay. I got it today, and i don't think its' a King Baboon. The guy i got it from says he isn't really sure. But i posted some pics on a tarantula site, and most people there say that they can at least tell that it's a New World tarantula.. But they aren't sure what kind, because it looks like its' about to molt, and because its' still pretty small. So, yeah. But you asked for pics, so here's a couple! They're a little bit fuzzy, but it had climbed onto the side so it was hard to get a good picture.

I agree with the new world suggestion, with that big mirror patch it could be a Grammostola species. You'll just have to wait until its bigger.

I actually like tarantulas, but someone a while ago posted about them and they will actually jump out of viv, if I remember correctly. When my hubby read that he said no, since he doesn't say no often I have to go along with him, unless one follows me home from the store, lol. susan

I think that when people refer to good "beginer" and "expert" spiders they're mostly refering to breeding. (Yikes!) I have two tarantulas, a Costa Rican zebra tarantula, which is supposidly a good "pet" tarantula, and a Cobalt Blue, an agressive Asian Old world spider. Their basic care is pretty much the same. The only difference really is that my Cobalt has a nice burrow I made for her, whereas my Zebra only has a dinky half log hide. =0

I think it's kinda important to make a burrow for your tarantula. It best emulates what kind of home they may have in the wild. The only thing that sucks about the burrow, is that my cobalt likes it too much. =( I very rarley see her, usually only when I feed her. Even then sometimes she evades my eyes. It is a very special treat when I do get to see her though!

I hate spiders, but I love tarantulas. I only have experience with the Grammostola genus - mine being a chilean rose.

Others are right though, its not a babboon. It looks like a monkey spidie to me perhaps an orange rump?
