Tax Question

airenlow

hope is not a strategy
I have an odd situation that I'm hoping somebody can help me figure out.

I am from AZ (still my permanent address) but I am going to school in OH. I work full time here and didn't earn a single dime in AZ this year. So my question is...do I need to file state taxes for both AZ and OH? :shrugs:

Thanks for any input!

Each state is different, but usually if you live and work in a state for 6 months or more you must file their state returns. If you own property in AZ you may have to do both, but look it up to be safe.

I have been in OH for almost 5 years now and don't own property anywhere. In the past I have only filed in OH without any problems, but I just wanted to check with somebody to see if that sounds correct.

Then you are fine. The only way states require you to file their state tax is if you have resided and worked there for 6 months or more so you should be fine. I hate tax season!!

I would still double check my info, but I have been in the same boat and asked and that is what I was told at least from MD.

You shouldn't have a filing need for AZ. If you had been a part year resident, you may have to even though your money was made elsewhere (though I'm not too clear on AZ, I haven't done very many of their returns) but since you were not a resident there in 08 at all, you shouldn't have to.

Thanks guys! Thats what I did last year but my mom thought I was going to get audited and end up in prison. :D If AZ is that desperate for my $81 they can throw me in the slammer! I'll double check your info just to be safe.

I know that HR Block will answer any question over the phone for free. I don't know if this includes state taxes, but it wouldn't cost you anything to call and find out. If you go to a HR Block they charge you, but over the phone is free. :)
